European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 28, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Anh Landers sunday october 28, 1990 the stars and stripes dear Ann Landers As a Central Ohio resident i am greatly disturbed by some events that took place Here a few months ago. James a a Buster Douglas Defeated Mike Tyson and became the heavyweight boxing Champion of the world. Douglas a Columbus native was the Toast of the town. Newscasters on every Channel gave him an incredible amount of air time. Mayor Dana Rinehart declared him Columbus no. 1 hero and spoke of giving him a Parade. Day after Day the Columbus dispatch was ablaze with Buster Douglas stones. So what a my problem i resent watching this City fete a Man whose Only claim to Fame is that he beat another Man senseless yes i know they were both in the ring because Thev wanted to be there. I guess they Call it a Freedom of Choice. There Are however examples of our government protecting us from ourselves even if we done to like it seat Belt Laws for example. Yet two men can get into a boxing ring Batter each other until their faces Are swollen beyond recognition risking permanent brain damage and even death while the crowd cheers them on. And its All Legal. The attached clipping from the Columbus dispatch tells about a group of teen agers who admitted punching participants in the recent March of dimes Wal Kathon. An 18-year-old has been charged with knocking out the front Teeth of a 15-year-old Walker. Why did he do it to show How Tough he was and emulate his hero Buster Douglas. Why do we condemn child battering wife beating muggy is and other forms of violence and permit boxing i find it strange that people pay millions of dollars to watch one human being beat the living daylights out of another and Call it a sport. Can it be that we Are not As civilized As we claim to be a Stephen v., Baltimore Ohio dear Stephen a a u periodically efforts have been made to do away with boxing but those who protest this a a sports have never got very far and i doubt that they Ever will a for two reasons. First there a too much Money involved. The hotels flourish ditto the betting casinos and eating places not to mention the Gate itself. Second there is something inherent in the nature of Man that revels in the excitement created by violence. I sometimes wonder if perhaps this is Why we have not known peace in the world for thousands of years. Dear Ann Landers i have been having an affair with a married Man who lives m another City several Hundred Miles away we started to see each other two years ago. He travels in his work. When we fell m love i was 19 and he was 39 he has to Call me collect because of his wife but he reimburses me for. The Calls at the end of every month. The question is should i charge him for the Federal state and local taxes it comes to about 8 percent a a a a a a a needing advice in Tennessee Ubart you have been sneaking around for two years with a married Man who is twice your age and your biggest concern is whether or not you should ask him to pay the taxes on your Telephone Bills please hang on to my address. I have a feeling you May want to write to me again. To answer your question since Lover boy agreed to pay for the phone Calls and the tax is part of the Cost the answer is yes. The suspension primarily affects soldiers whose expiration of term of service ets occurs on and after sept. 1, 1990, and Vanous types of voluntary Early separations. Soldiers assigned to units scheduled for inactivation Are reported to the department of the army for disposition instructions. The suspension derives from the presidents in Voca ii a is authority a under Section 673c, title 10 code t0 suspend Laws relating to separation upon order to Active duty of the selected Reserve for an operational Mission. Pre Identa by executive order delegated his Anthonty to the Secretary of defense who further delegated it to the service secretaries. Let me assure you that the army s decision to exercise the delegated authority was based on thorough analysis of the situation. In our judgment it was necessary to suspend the separation of soldiers essential to the maintenance of readiness in deploying units and the remainder of the army by retention of soldiers in critical skills. As with any policy of course there Are exceptions soldiers whose separations were suspended but who have compelling compassionate reasons to warrant separation May request an exception. You May submit a request for exception to your thanks but no thanks please pass on my thanks to Gen.
