The original Black and White horror classic of 1968 has been special to me Ever since my parents traumatized me and my sister by dragging us to see it. They tried the a we did no to know what it would be about Dodge but with a title like night of the living dead its hard to imagine anyone mistaking it for Bambi. So when i heard that director George Romero was making a new version of his Milestone film i was dubious. Why would he ruin one of the formative experiences of my youth simply for the Chance to splash Gore across the screen in color i mumbled for a while about How nothing is sacred anymore until my wife told me to shut up already. Well i should have had More Faith. Sure there a Gore but its far from gratuitous. And Romero has retooled the Story to allow for a lot More social satire a and a lot More fun. He wisely decided to stick with unknown actors which maintains the undernourished a movie flavor of the original. As we know the film opens with Barbara Patricia Tallman and her brother visiting their mothers grave where they re attacked by drooling zombies. Her brother is killed but Barbara escapes to a nearby farmhouse where she a soon joined by Ben Tony Tod who has just slowed his Way through a few ghouls in a pickup that is All but out of Gas. After dispatching the Zombie Homeowner they meet City folks Harry and Helen Cooper Tom Towles and Mckee on movies Anderson. They be been holed up in the basement with their teen age daughter who has been bitten by a Zombie and a Young farm couple Tom and Judy William Butler and Kate Finneran. Once the characters debut its almost the same Story line As in the original. But Romero and co director Tom Savini Best known for his makeup effects on Dawn of the dead and Friday the 13th, make several major changes a All for the better. One is the Barbara character. She was car catatonic for much of the original but in this Post feminist age Romero and Savini turn her into a steel hard Sharpshooter who dispatches numerous ghouls with no hesitation. The filmmakers also devise a slightly different Fate for Ben although one that is As equally unjust As in the original. But the biggest change comes when Barbara goes to a local base Camp with a band of Good old boys with Semi Auto rifles who Are out on the ultimate Hunt a gunning Down human beings that Are considered fair game. She a appalled to find a circus like atmosphere. Several still struggling zombies have been Strung up from Trees so the Hunters can Pepper them with Lead and laugh As the ghouls twitch. A a they re us a she mutters. A a we re them and they re  its this dead on message about the monster that lurks in All of us that makes this film worthy of a place next to the original. My hats off to Romero. Night of the living dead gets four stars.
