European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - February 24, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Observations a with snowfall comes a flurry woes \ a a a a Ken George Quot Tel staff photographer b before turning in the other night i gave thanks for the Beautiful Fluffy Snow that had finally arrived in abundance. And As i Lay awake listening to it Load my roof i made a mental list of All the Good things i associate with Winter Snow a and driving. I thought of the reasons i could never live where there is no Winter in a from Montana or Force my family to live a mundane existence in a temperate climate. Not for us the Boring places where wimpy temperatures a a hover rather than plummet. I can go to sleep at night secure in the thought that my car is plugged in and it will Start in the morning. Of course if it continues to Snow i must find it before i can Start it. I have a garage but in be lost the key. Until the recent terrorist threat Seldom did i lock the garage. So now when the garage is needed the most it is locked a and my car remains outside. Probably the key is under the Blanket of Snow. Why not remove the Snow you ask. I have two children. You can t live in a Winter climate without children. Without children the Broom or scoop shovel you use to sweep the Snow from the car or. Clear the driveway would be standing where you left it. Now it is not and a Broom or shovel lying Down does no to make a Hump beneath a foot of Snow. So i use my Bare hands and a broken plastic Snow scoop to accomplish the tasks while filling my sleeves. What fun. 1 wonder if birth control could be made retroactive then each morning after a snowfall it is time for a new adventure wondering How fast i have to hit the end of the driveway to Clear the plug the Sno plow left the night before. I m a country boy and have a Long driveway so a substantial snowfall sometimes requires overdrive and Turbo boost. In be Only failed to break through once when Sloppy Snow was slowed in before temperatures dropped. 1 hit a Wall of ice then caught a ride with a neighbor. T even higher on my list of Winter greats is the Challenge offered by the chunks of ice that attach themselves to my Windshield wipers and leave sludgy trails of a wiped Snow on my window. The adrenalin pumps As 1 Roll Down my window and pit myself against the moving wiper trying to grab it As it reaches the Edge of the window picking it up and snapping it against the window to dislodge the ice. For More fun than 1 can stand i try this with the wipers on High Speed. 1without ice Snow and cold i would never hear the shrieking wine of my super All season Dun lops. Go anywhere Winter waster tires spinning a song on ice a what could possibly tempt me to live without that sound and keep in mind that those a special Winter tires Don t always work As my 3 1 Mph heavy duty plastic moulded bump or confirms a. How about the line blowing Snow that plugs my Heater vents or the Snow that Sills in through a crack from a window let slightly rolled Down again what is Winter without chill run what a greater thrill than melting a Small Drill on the car scat with my backside while the Heater fan tosses Snow in my face. A. A this coupled with scraping the inside of my. W window As 1 drive and showering myself with ice shavings is something that Only a few of us Are Lucky enough to experience. Maybe All these Winter wonders Aren t for me. Perhaps i took a wrong turn while peeping through those Little ragged holes scraped Tormy icy Windshield and 1 really Don t belong Here. In a just visiting Germany and my plane is boarding even now. Aloha be our guest sunday Magazine has set aside space for guest columnists.
