In his closing speech at the end of the Senate debate Andreotti 72, stressed that despite its difficult birth amid party squabbling and political controversy he intended the government to stay in office throughout the final year of the current five year legislature. He said a major Benefit was that the formation of the new government averted new parliamentary elections a year ahead of schedule something none of the Par ties wanted. In the past 20 years no legislature has lasted its full term and premature elections have had to be held.
