The a Tomahawk chop did not offend me or my family. What did offend me was the whole controversy. Why did no to we hear from you five years ago a even last year in be never heard any complaints about the braves the redskins the chiefs or even about the Florida state seminoles until this year. I am glad these sports teams chose the names they have. I look Forward to the Day my son or daughter and i Are watching a game and they ask a Mommy what a a Redskin a i would feel proud in telling the history of my people. Native americans Are becoming extinct and i feel these teams Are preserving my heritage. The Only thing the writer and i see Eye to Eye on is the Landing of Columbus which is a Holiday i do not celebrate. I do agree that everything was taken away from the native americans. The Only thing that remains is a handful of my people the land we were forced to live on stories about our great grandparents and sports teams honouring our people by the names they have. A Harriett c. Allen Baum older German they told him so people told me if i voted for Dukakis americans Economy would end up in a shambles. I voted for Dukakis and sure enough our Economy is in a shambles. A Gene Phillips Frankfurt German dependents can speak out this is in response to the letter a Bias against i am also a military spouse having become one after taking off my uniform this past August. The Only difference Between her and i is that i have a wife a career to think about and not a husbands. She expressed her frustration at a system that she feels ignores the military spouse and All their concerns. She stated that spouses Are restricted from speaking out on problems because of fear of damaging the career of their sponsor. Nothing could be further from the truth. Having a spouse employed by the military gives you a unique Opportunity to speak out against any unfairness that you May encounter without fear of reprisal. Not being accountable to the Chain of command for anything you say leaves the door wide open for you to voice any concern that you May have to anybody you wish a from your husband wife a commander to the chief of staff of the army and even further if you Haven to received results. The Only thing you have to worry about is being right before you begin. The Only thing your sponsor is responsible for is your actions while you Are in the command. Your spouses career cannot be affected by anything you say As Long As you done to break any Laws in saying it. The military is full of rules and regulations regarding promotions reductions in rank and Ucma uniform military code of Justice actions. These regulations Are written in Black and White. If your spouse is performing his her duties to Standard anything you say would have no affect on his her career. If your reason to complain is valid nobody can take away your right to do so to whomever you feel will rectify the problem. A John p. A Tracey Bilodeau Villa Manseur franc prevent co poisoning in december 1988, while stationed at fort Hood Texas our entire family of six nearly died of Carbon monoxide poisoning. We weren to living in a ghetto a we were in a Middle class neighbourhood. We had Central Gas heat and being unfamiliar with the system the potential danger and the symptoms of poisoning we came within minutes of death. Every time i read the frequent newspaper accounts of families succumbing to deadly Gas fumes my heart aches. The symptoms of Carbon monoxide chemical formula co poisoning Are rarely listed. I Hope and Pray that through this letter a life May be saved. Carbon monoxide is odourless and invisible. The symptoms of poisoning resemble the flu headache dizziness letters to the editor nausea fatigue and As the situation becomes critical flushed Cheeks and a pounding heart and possibly Chest pains. Our team of doctors in san Antonio told us that the fumes alter a part of your brain affecting the thought process. You can have All the symptoms and be tottering on the Brink of consciousness watching your beloved family literally falling around you and your muddled brain will Tell you a a it Sok. Go to but done to. Get out of the area into fresh air. Get help. Medical attention is an absolute must even if you think you re of. If untreated permanent brain damage is a possibility. Carbon monoxide robs your brain of oxygen. As your heart tries to pump More oxygen Rich or in this Case co Rich blood to your brain a stroke or heart attack occurs. If you have been exposed to co you need oxygen fast and plenty of it. Doctors and clinic personnel this next part is for you. We had a Small leak that allowed co to slowly seep into our Home Over a period of three to four weeks we were in Texas so we did no to have the heat on constantly. During this period As we were slowly being poisoned we made a total of six visits to our local dispensary citing the exact symptoms unbeknownst to us of co poisoning. We were repeatedly told a a it a the flu. Go Home and go to bed a a virtual death sentence. One doctor even told me that my family a illnesses were psychosomatic. Doctors nurses please familiarize yourself with these symptoms. The simple blood test Only takes 10 minutes. Take the time to be thorough. Preventive measures Are the Best answer since once the co reaches a certain level the affected persons will simply Lay Down and die. Have your furnaces checked out professionally before cold weather each year. Avoid the use of Gas space Heaters electric ones Are readily available and easy to use. If you have Gas heat always keep your windows open at least one Inch. It May run up your Bill a bit but our doctors said that is what saved our lives. I Praise god that we survived. Our doctors said it was a Miracle. As i Lay in the Hospital i tried to think of How we could turn this awful experience into something constructive. If telling others what happened to us can save even one life then my family a trauma will not have been in vain. Be careful and Happy holidays. We re certainly glad to be Here.
