In his sentence afro american is a Predi letters to the editor ing this student and his friends their food we discriminated against them Ondon t hit panic key an article on computer viruses in the Christmas edition Stales that a viruses Are running rampant through army and air Force with that sentence the author May have caused undue panic in some computer users. Viruses Are not a running rampant Quot in military computer systems. It is True to say that the potential for infection of viruses and other unfriendly programs is there much like the potential for humans to come into Contact with a venereal disease or even aids. Like aids and cd the Best Protection against a computer virus is abstinence. Unfortunately users cant always abstain from using programs or data disks from outside sources. Also Many military computers arc tied in to other systems via modems Telephone lines and local area networks. The safety advice offered by the article is very sensible especially about a backing up Quot but there Are Many very effective and efficient ways to Quot inoculate Quot a computer system against such intrusions. A Carl t. Feagans Bamberg Germany the a Nev is us 1 have a few words to add about the Issue of discrimination. Discrimination is a word that has taken on its own meaning. Our society seems to be taking a step backward instead of pushing Forward. Why have we let this word become a major Issue when we View discrimination most people will Sec it a Black or while Issue. It s a shame that the world has become so stereotyped. As a civilian employee i have seen Whites As Well As Blacks discriminate against each other so what s with this Black White Issue if we must put a Label on this word it is Only fair to say that we Are our own worst enemy and that discrimination lies solely in those who choose to make an Issue out of it. Whether Black or White discrimination for no justified reason is morally wrong. A Caroline Goodman Ramstein a Germany. Iut hulling reasoning a recent writer cites several reasons Why he believes he can to be an american his first reason is that he says the 15th amendment makes him a Quot second class in Tael the i5lh amendment says 1. The right of Titi ens id the la cited states to vote shall not he denied or abridged by the United states or any state on account of race. Color or previous condition of servitude. 2. The Congress shall have Power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. How this makes the writer a Quot second class citizen Quot is not Clear unless he objects to having his voting rights protected. His second reason is that african americans do Quot More than our share As he does not attempt to prove his Point. Third he says a bolls taken today show that we Are separate and since he does not say which polls or How they show this his Point is not proved. Fourth lie Sas he is Quot not a negro nor a Black Quot because these words Are adjectives. In fact these words Are nouns. Then he save. A i am Abo Amer Cate adjective. The writer then discusses Africa and his african heritage though he like the vast majority of african americans has probably never been Loblack Africa and is probably not fluent in any language spoken there unless you include English. He concludes by saying that since application forms ask Lor ethnic background he cannot be an american first. In this last Point i fully agree with him. No application form should ask anything about race or sex. And the Job or position should go exclusively to the most qualified person which is the american Way. Today was one of the Days where the Downs by far outweighed the . To be fair i have to say that it usually is the other Way around. When 1 arrived at work this morning everybody was in Good spirits. The preparations for lunch went Well and we a my four to workers our cafeteria manager and myself a had enough time to enjoy a relaxed break before the first lunch started. Things wont fairly smooth until the Bell rang that it was time to go Back to class. Normally the cafeteria staff has about 20 minutes to get ready for the second lunch group to catch up on washing the lunch trays cleaning up the counters sweeping the floor in the serving lines refilling the juice and Milkshake machines refilling the food containers making French Fries refilling the napkins and flatware containers Etc. During this time we Are not allowed to sell Tood to students and students Are not allowed in the cafeteria unless they have special permission. This is a Rule not made by us but by the principal of our school. The students who Are late usually Curry a permission slip. Today a student came to Purchase Bench tries Between the lunch periods. Since he did not have a permission slip we did not sell him the food. Of course lie wanted to know Why and was told that we go by the principals rules. He went to his friends who were also sitting in the Cater crib. A Short while later allot them came to us and wanted to buy something. The answer again was no. My co workers asked him Why he wanted to Purchase More food since he had been through the lunch line several times y of will never guess what came next. Not on were we accused of deny lop if it All. He rushed Over to our lunch Monitor and talked to her. She asked me to ring up an order of French Fries for her. Under different circumstances i would have done just that without hesitation1 but not today. Why because i knew that they were for that boy actually they were for his Girlfriend. Both of us ended up complaining to the assistant principal he because he did t get his food and i because i wanted to be reassured about our rules and because neither my co worker nor myself appreciated the teen Ager s accusation of being discriminated against because of the color of his skin. Shortly after i had returned to the cafeteria both the Deputy principal and the assistant principal came a to straighten out Quot the matter by talking to the lunch room Monitor and the student. Believe it or not neither my coworker nor myself were Given a Chance to speak up in this matter. I realize that maybe i should have taken a different approach but i think that i had very right to speak up the end of the fish or was that the Bov purchased the Tood during second lunch after All and left without another complaint. ,. On occasion we the cafeteria staff feel that we Are perceived As some brainless second class citizens who do not qualify for anything better than a Cook or cashier position. Among us Are a Legal Secretary a bookkeeper a kindergarten teacher a pastry chef and a seamstress. We All have our reasons for working at the cafeteria. My children Are All in school and i like to be Home when they Are Home. 1 am the kindergarten teacher. Should you get the impression that i am upset disgusted annoyed insulted and feel just a bit belittled you Are absolutely right a hide Vanegas kit Zingen Germany main slam dunked i have read one too Many articles about magic Johnson a the one in a million my definition of a Folk hero docs not include someone who can to keep his punts zipped if some doting female says a smile and drop maybe the people of the press Are so jaded to truth and Beauty that they think a Man who blinks his Way across the United slates is a doing All the right maybe Giraldo should do a special on women who Are dying of aids because they were dazzled by or. Johnson. My sympathy goes out to his wife and new baby living with the knowledge that they might not live Long lives in the Shadow of or. Johnson s sexual Philan trophy. Rather than being a a heartbreakingly clean kid Quot he is just a heart breaker infected by and infecting foolish women and maybe an innocent baby suffering in his body the consequences of his promiscuous lifestyle. There is nothing magic about casual sex or a tall tomcat. Enough about tragic Johnson and his infectious smile. A Claudia j. Nelson Heidelberg Germany tip on bag bargain Iris Cromartie s recent letter about using Canvas bags is a wonderful idea. But instead of getting printed bags at cafes for just under $3 each get Plain bags on the Economy for under 1 Mark each. A Rebecca Ponce a Ternbach Germany
