You see the smoke and you hear the rumblings but you still never really know when the things going to explode. The hurricanes were on full rumble this week As they prepared for wednesday nights match against Nebraska in the Orange bowl. In the past such disturbances have set off some pretty Good fireworks. Five years ago there was the desert storm of controversy that surrounded their fiesta bowl showdown against Penn state. The hurricanes got off the plane at sky Harbor Airport wearing Battle fatigues then walked out of a bowl sponsored Steak Fry in Honor of both teams. Jerome Brown who led the departure questioned whether . Troops would have dined with Japan before they bombed Pearl Harbor. Sometimes the explosion comes late like in last years Cotton bowl. The hurricanes went through the week As the quiet team letting Texas spout All the Bulle tin Board quotes then ran up 202 Yards in penalties in a 46-3 Victory Over the longhorns. Nine of those penalties were for unsportsmanlike conduct or personal fouls. Those were the major eruptions. A number of regular season games were marred by Brief skirmishes or out and out fights including contests against notre Dame san Diego state and Kansas. Now All the pieces seem to be in place for another eruption. Not Only is it bowl week but the hurricanes seem particularly ticked about the Way they have been treated in the polls. It s not bad enough that Washington is placed ahead of them in the ratings but they keep falling further behind every time they win a game. Quarterback Gino Torretta wonders what happened to the support Miami had after the hurricanes knocked Florida state from the top ranking. A people knew How Good Florida state is then we beat them and people say maybe Miami is the Best team in the country a he said. A then they think about it some More and say maybe running Back Larry Jones Quot we re no. 1 by far. Washington has t played the Caliper teams like we have. We played Florida state and beat them at their place. The Best the huskies have done is play Nebraska and they re not the same Caliper As Florida Center Kelvin Harris a if Washington played in Florida they would be the fourth Best team in the defensive end Rusty Medearis Quot the voters Are biased. Everybody can see it a people have been voting us no. 3 or less. People hate to see us win All the time. They like to support the underdog so they vote for defensive tackle Anthony Hamlet uttered an even harsher Soliloquy. A Washington s a Flash in the pan Quot he said. A a they re like Colorado was last year a they have no business winning a National championship. Colorado did t deserve it last year a they won on a fifth Down a and Washington does t deserve it this year. Washington May win All its games this year but next year they la win but the hurricanes had to be especially careful to avoid eruptions of any sort wednesday night. A National title was Riding on it. With the championship unable to be settled on the Field style Points carry just As much weight As scoreboard Points. And the hurricanes who Are the first to blame their bad boy image for their slide simply cannot afford to slip Back into their old ways. A people do not want to Sec another incident like the Cotton bowl a linebacker Michael Barrow said. A they want us to win with class. We know if we come up with a Cotton bowl ii it s going to Hurt us in the actually the hurricanes have made remarkable Progress in coach Dennis Erickson a crusade to clean up his teams image. White shoes on the Field Are out replaced by Joe Paterno style Black cleats. A dress code has been instituted for official functions. Quot we like to look Well dressed and show people we re not the Miami hoods Orretta said. Quot we want to show that we re All Nice but most important the conduct on the Field has cleaned up dramatically. After last season. Erickson knew his train would be under a bigger Microscope than anybody else. A we want to play hard and we want to play with class and we want to win with Erickson said. Quot that s where we want to get this despite the added threat of a Quick hag for excessive behaviour this season the hurricanes have drawn Only one such penalty. That happened against Tulsa when Lamar Thomas crowed a Little too much about a Block he had thrown. A the had been talking to me All through the first Thomas said. A i think the referee was just trying to set the tone. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Eve said things a lot worse. I just asked him if he really wanted to get but the Lack of penalties does t mean the hurricanes Arentt above pushing the envelope from time to time. Miami still leads the nation in curtain Calls punctuating a big play by struts and outstretched arms. Thomas i upset Arizona coach Dick Tommy this season during a 46-Yard to reception when he slowed Down at the 10-Yard line walked into the end one and Ever so gently set the Ball Down just inside the goal line. All of this was sure to be monitored closely wednesday night. And the urge to shake and bake in t easily overcome. Quot if the adrenaline is flowing you can to help it sometimes Quot Barrow said. A your hips just Start swaying. It s Tough to fight the but fight it they must. If the Volcano erupts their National title Hopes May blow up with it.
