We stayed through the lean years when Jimmy Carter refused to raise military pay and the military fell some 21 percent behind the civilian sector pay raises. We stayed in the service when we were sent Back to Southeast Asia two and even three times. By this time we had invested our entire adult lives in a the profession of arms and we had asked very Little in return outside of a secure future that would allow us to take care of our families. In Short we lived by the rules that you would now have us forget. There were those however for whom a single tour in Vietnam was enough to convince them that flying for the airlines was not Only a More profitable line of work it was a hell of a lot safer. Many men and women left the service for Greener pastures in those years but Many More stayed. We were not Quot shamefully selfish or a ignorant a As a recent writer so i delicately put it. We unfortunately in our innocence or ignorance forgot about a Congress that even then did not quite play by the rules. By its actions today Congress is forcing the next generation of military candidates to re evaluate their options. Few intelligent men and women will choose a career that offers no guarantee for Superior performance and dedication. Those who Are willing to risk their lives in the service of their country have at the very least the right to expect a secure future bound by the rules and regulations they Are asked to accept when they Start their careers. Congress has shown that this will not be the Case. The understood Security in the unwritten military contract has been destroyed forever. I can find work when i am told to go before my a understood military contract is fulfilled. Even if i cannot i will survive but i am afraid that the dedicated professional military that i know will not survive. It is being systematically executed by politicians who do not seem to realize that they Are also destroying any Hope of rebuilding a viable military Force in the future. Instead of preaching to those of us who have served a lot longer and through a lot More difficult times than this writer has he had better Start praying that in the future Congress is not composed of people like him who feel that military service is to be donated by those who volunteered and that the a a rules can be changed at the whim of politicians who hold their chances of reelection in higher esteem than they do the future Security of our nation. A col. . Keese Brussels Belgium give us a break this is written in agreement with the e-4 promotable with prior service who has expressed the same concern As Many other specialist promotable with prior service. I am prior service with less than six years in but soon my turn to get the Boot will come because of the army a drastic changes. So far i meet All other requirements except the five years of consecutive service. This is very unfair. I would like to suggest that prior service personnel who were forced out of the service and had to stay out for five years be Given a Date of enlistment from the last time of enlisting or be Given a Chance like the other specialist promotable with five years in service to apply for the sub selective separation Benefit or Vii voluntary separation incentive most of us Are considered to be an asset to our units and to the . Army and would love to stay. Many Are doing everything possible to stay but with the time allotted and with these changes in the world today it seems impossible. We would just like the same break or incentives. A spec. Allen j. One tenth of 1 percent is enough to dilute the caucasian blood enough that you Are not considered White. But when it suits the White american purpose any White is White enough. The afr centrist View gives Black americans a Chance to understand some of their heritage and a history before slavery. Although some of it May be speculation White America has offered no alternatives to Blacks As to any history before slavery Only their version. At least let us investigate on our own. Is it not Likely that even if As this writer admits Africa is the Birthplace of the human race that math and science May have started there also he seems to take Pride in his european roots and culture while he seems threatened by any other version a sgt. Jeffery scooper Schweinfurt Germany disdainful japanese. With alarming regularity the members of the japanese parliament have expressed attitudes and actions that have shown open contempt for american businesses and their employees. These Are not isolated cases these Are statements from the Hierarchy of the japanese government and reflect an accurate representation of their disdain for the american people in general. Wake up America. The pre world War ii attitude of the japanese is resurfacing just As was the Case before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The japanese Are again thinking that the americans Are apathetic and Lazy. I will give credit where credit is due. The japanese Are master forgers. They do have a Way with taking the inventiveness and creativity of an american product and copying it. Letters to the editor fortunately we americans Are masters of our own destiny. We Are not a nation that depends on others for our Prosperity. We still have the key to our future. We still have the Means to rebuild our Economy. We still have the Means to put american workers Back into jobs. We still have the Means to take the homeless off the streets. We still have the Means to provide a better life for our sons and daughters. We can still have the american dream. The key lies with each and every one of us. We hold it in our hands each and every Day. With every Purchase you make you decide the Fate of the american worker. Think of the Money you have spent on japanese products. Now multiply that number by the 250 million americans just like you. Do you know How Many jobs that Money could have created a sgt Alan l. Christopher Vicenza Italy ready to buy american Japan a discriminatory practices isolationist attitude and Superior viewpoint has got it into trouble in the past. It has done so again. Perhaps if Japan had paid for its own defense Over the last 45 years it have been Able to concentrate so Well in the economic area. Americans have spent billions with our military bases in their country. In fact we be stretched ourselves mighty thin to be the worlds protector. In fact in be read or heard nothing about Japan a assisting the russians in their current struggle. The last i heard Japan wanted Sakhalin Island returned to it in Exchange for its help. Of course we can throw Japan off the free Market ride it has been on in our country. This move has political repercussions. Personally when i return to the United states ill make sure to buy an american made car. I wont buy foreign made clothes and appliances unless in a forced to and if that happens ill write to the company stating my displeasure and that i want . Goods its such a simple measure to Correct the Trade imbalance. If we All practice this policy Well Cut deep into japanese imports. Our government does no to have to do a thing. We the Consumers can do it. In the meantime Well continue to Aid Russia. Perhaps Well end up with a Friend to compare with England. What a wonderful Opportunity we have now with such a mighty nation. Our humanitarian efforts Over the years rebuilt Europe saving thousands of lives. We be aided Bangladesh Africa Mexico and England. A Shirley a.
