A cosmic Waves will be measured to test Albert einsteins theory of relativity in a $200 million research project coming to Washington states Hanford nuclear reservation and a site in Louisiana. The National science foundation announced wednesday that Hanford and Livingston la., near Baton Rouge have been chosen out of 19 candidates for one of the largest research projects in the foundations history. The project will attempt to detect gravitational Waves for the first time a discovery which could help explain the origins of the universe said the Washington foundation. A it opens a totally new window on the universe a said Rochus Vogt a director of the project and a professor at the California Institute of technology. The project is funded by the psf and operated by Cal tech and the Massachusetts Institute of technology. It is not related to Hanford a current Mission of cleaning up waste left by nuclear weapons production at the site. The Hanford site decision is conditional and depends on further environmental analysis psf director Walter Massey said though he noted there appeared to be few obstacles. The two Sites will operate As a single Observatory. The laser interferometer gravitational wave Observatory project will employ 10 to 20 people. But it will involve construction at each site of two huge a shaped measuring devices 2.5 Miles Long said . Rep. Sid Morrison r-Wash., whose District includes Hanford in Central Washington. The measuring devices made of 4-foot-diameter vacuum pipe will be buried or covered in Concrete. Gravitational Waves will be measured by laser beams As the Waves pass through the pipes. The two observatories will Cost $211 million Over five years Morrison said. The project is dedicated to detecting cosmic gravitational Waves and harnessing those Waves for scientific research the psf said. Those Waves arc Ripples in the fabric of space and time produced by violent events in the Distant universe such As the collision of Black holes or the explosion of a Supernova. Black holes arc theoretical Phenomena believed to contain intense gravitational Fields from which neither Light nor matter can escape. A Supernova is an extremely Bright Star. The Ripples travel to Earth bringing with them information about their origins and about the nature of Gravity. Einstein predicted the existence of these gravitational Waves in 1918 in his general theory of relativity but Only now is technology powerful enough to harness the Waves for science the psf said. The Waves have never been directly detected but scientists have been confident they exist the foundation said. General relativity describes Gravity As the manifestation of the curvature of space time. The new observatories raise the possibility of a verifying that gravitational Waves exist. A testing the general relativity theory a prediction that the Waves propagate at the Speed of Light. A testing the theory a prediction that the Waves stretch matter in one direction while squeezing it in another. A verifying that Black holes exist. A this will be the most stringent test Ever of einsteins general relativity theory a the psf said.
