European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - February 21, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday february 21, 1992 the stars and stripes a Page 5 project to measure Ripples from space Yakima. Wash map Quot c Necmi. A Yakima Wash. Apr cosmic Waves will be measured to test Albert einsteins theory of relativity in a $200 million research project coming to Washington states Hanford nuclear reservation and a site in Louisiana. The National science foundation announced wednesday that Hanford and Livingston la., near Baton Rouge have been chosen out of 19 candidates for one of the largest research projects in the foundation s history. The project will attempt to detect gravitational Waves for the first time a discovery which could help explain the origins of the universe said the Washington foundation. A it opens a totally new window on the universe a said Rochus Vogt a director of the project and a professor at the California Institute of technology. The project is funded by the psf and operated by Cal tech and the Massachusetts Institute of technology. It is not related to Hanford a current Mission of cleaning up waste left by nuclear weapons production at the site. The Hanford site decision is conditional and depends on further environmental analysis psf director Walter Massey said though he noted there appeared to be few obstacles. The two Sites will operate As a single Observatory. The laser interferometer gravitational wave Observatory project will employ 10 to 20 people. But it will involve construction at each site of two huge a shaped measuring devices 2.5 Miles Long said . Rep. Sid Morrison r-Wash., whose District includes Hanford in Central Washington. The measuring devices made of 4-foot-diameter vacuum pipe will be buried or covered in Concrete. Gravitational Waves will be measured by laser beams As the Waves pass through the pipes. The two observatories will Cost $211 million Over five years Morrison said. The project is dedicated to detecting cosmic gravitational Waves and harnessing those Waves for scientific research the psf said. Those Waves Are Ripples in the fabric of space and time produced by violent events in the Distant universe such As the collision of Black holes or the explosion of a Supernova. Black holes arc theoretical Phenomena believed to contain intense gravitational Fields from which neither Light nor matter can escape. A Supernova is an extremely Bright Star. The Ripples travel to Earth bringing with them information about their origins and about the nature of Gravity. Einstein predicted the existence of these gravitational Waves in 1918 in his general theory of relativity but Only now is technology powerful enough to harness the Waves for science the psf said. The Waves have never been directly detected but scientists have been confident they exist the foundation said. General relativity describes Gravity As the manifestation of the curvature of space time. The new observatories raise the possibility of a verifying that gravitational Waves exist. A testing the general relativity theory a prediction that the Waves propagate at the Speed of Light. A testing the theory a prediction that the Waves stretch matter in one direction while squeezing it in another. A verifying that Black holes exist. A this will be the most stringent test Ever of einsteins general relativity theory a the psf assail ouster of Nasa chief Washington apr members of Congress condemned what they said was the forced resignation of Nasa administrator Richard h. Truly As the former astronaut on wednesday defended the Bush administrations budget for the space Agency. Rep. Norman Mineta a Calif a charged the administration was using the space Agency As a a political poker chips and a a Public relations tool for the rehabilitation of Dan vice president Quayle and the National space Council which he Heads have been at Odds with Nasa and truly Over management issues. President Bush last week said he had a a regretfully accepted truly a resignation although truly said he had been asked to step Down. A whatever political or policy agendas the White House May have neither Nasa or Admiral truly deserve this treatment a Mineta said As other congressmen of both parties praised truly a tenure. Truly appeared before the House committee on Sci ence space and technology space subcommittee. He defended the administrations proposed $15 billion budget for the National a aeronautics and space administration in fiscal 1993, although he said it provided for no growth after inflation. Republicans were sharply critical of that budget however. Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner jr., r-wis., and others said the administration is try my to continue too Many truly space programs while failing to set priorities and eliminate unworthy projects. Rep. Dick Zimmer r-n.j., called it a a Buck Rogers budget a Long on fantasy but Short on there simply will not be enough Money available in the future to Complete All the programs set Forth in this spending blueprint a Zimmer said. Truly s resignation effective april 1, comes As the Agency faces another Battle in Congress Over efforts to eliminate the $30 billion space station which would receive $2.25 billion in the next fiscal year. Truly said budget cuts have forced a 9-month delay m projected full operation of the space station but that it remains essentially on schedule. Truly said the budget was the Best he could have expected under the governments budget restraints. But he asked Congress for a better stability in future budget commitments in order to allow it to effective planning. R a if you cannot do that i think you re going to continue to see a turbulence that is hurting americans space program a he said.
