The labor department reported that the seasonally adjusted total for the week ending feb. 15 represented an increase of 7,000 claim applications from the previous week. The increase was led by higher claim applications in Texas and Oklahoma. States reporting the biggest decreases in claims were Michigan and California. It marked the second straight week that claims have risen following an even larger 18,000 increase for the week ending feb. 8. Analysts who had been expecting claims to decline slightly were disappointed by the new figure saying it showed that the Impact of layoffs was still being Felt in Many parts of the United states. While cautioning that the changes from week to week can be extremely volatile analysts noted that the four week moving average for claims has remained stuck at a discouraging by High level of around 450,000. Many economists believe that the unemployment rate which is currently at a recession High of 7.1 percent will move higher in coming months even if the Economy is Able to mount a sustained recovery beginning in the Spring.
