Einbeck old buildings and Bock Beer by Rob Staggenborg staff writer journey into the Small German town of Einbeck and take a glance Back into the Middle Ages. Nestled Between the soiling Hills and the Harz mountains Einbeck is a mix of old and new with modern shopping centers huddled around Isth Century buildings. During the Middle Ages Einbeck was part of the powerful hanseatic league and a commercial Center at the intersection of Long distance trading routes. Much of its accumulated wealth was spent on its buildings and churches. Today Einbeck has More than 1 20 houses dating to the 1500s. Many of the half timbered structures preserved and restored with painstaking care Are clustered together creating sections of the City that give a True picture of old Germany. The buildings built in the Weser Renaissance style have coloured Gables finely carved Woodwork and distinctive turrets. The town Hall the Market Church the Grodhaus and the , All grouped around the Mark Platz serve1 As Einbeck s architectural Centrepiece. The town Hall has an unusual look with three Spires rising not from its roof but rather from above two ground floor windows and a door. Standing Side by Side opposite the town Hall Are the Grodhaus and the Multi storied rats Apotheker. Both have attic windows where once there were ventilation slots evidence that the two were formerly used As storage barns for the Barley and hops used in the City s breweries. It was the town s renowned breweries that brought it economic Prosperity and International trading clout. Einbecker Beer still brewed today is an institution in the Region that dates bar k More than Hoo years. The Einbecker brewery was the first in Germany to produce Bock or dark Beer and its specially Beer or Maybock is available Only during the month of May. The Beer was originally known As Ein Yockisch Bier a name that became distorted to pm Bock and later to Fock to tier the name that eventually St k. As Early As 1 55 of the Dukes of Havana Vav Eie Huy my i. Rinbei k s most popular Export. Citizens of Munich acquired a taste for the brew and one of Einbeck s Brewers was enticed to Munich to Start a brewery there. That brewery still stands today in Munich. You May have heard of the hot Rauhaus. In the Center of the Mark Platz stands a statue immortal izing a dog and a Man named till Eule Spiegel a Brewer known for his skill in practical jokes. Legend has it that when the master Brewer ordered Eule Spiegel to add More hops to the boiling brew la sprang into action. The dog s name was hops and Well you know. A stroll through the pedestrian District takes visitors past a wealth of decorated facades with elaborate carvings and written inscriptions. 1 he words reflect the builders thoughts die structures express their Pride and the Einbeck people s need to assert themselves As Well As the Power of the City s Faith and the humility of its people. The builders needed All these traits for the buildings were destroyed by fire several times in Einbeck s history each time being rebuilt. One of the More unusual buildings is at no. 13 Mark Strasse Home to a Spiegel department store. While most structures Are adorned with carved images of traditional crafts this one is elaborately decorated with motifs from both ancient mythology and christianity. The Neon Quot Spiegel Quot sign looks dreadfully out of place. The City s wealth and emphasis on Art is also evident in Einbeck s churches. Visitors can Marvel at the circular cast brass chandelier in the collegiate Church of St. Alexander and Admire the magnificence of the late gothic Wall paintings in St. Bartholomew s Chapel. This Chapel also has a memorial to one of the City s greatest citizens Friedrich Wilhelm ser tuner who discovered morphine. Several Fine goblets once used in the churches and other works by Einbeck Goldsmiths formerly belonging to its various guilds Are now in Einbeck s municipal museum. Part of Einbeck s City Wall remains intact and a walk around the fortifications is a must. Postcard panoramas Are around each Corner. The ring of Walls ditches ramparts and towers now gives Way to Small Parks a Duck Pond and open areas crossed by footpaths. 6 stripes Magazine May 21, 1992 the old Tow n features a Mare of decorative facades and fancy signs.
