The ships Are racing to America to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the historic voyage to the new world by Christopher Columbus. The regatta started from Columbus Hometown of Genoa Italy and picked up competitors in Spain the nation that sponsored Columbus explorations. After stops in san Juan puerto Rico new York and Boston the Fleet will re Cross the Atlantic working its Way up the coast of Spain and France before winding up in Liverpool England in August. The Armada which will fluctuate in size during its journey had grown to nearly 200 ships when it left Cadiz Spain on its Way West earlier this month. They Are continuing a tradition started in 1956, when the first sail training race was held in British Waters. The idea behind it was to gather All the great sailing ships still being used for sail training to give the world a nostalgic nudge toward saving the ships before the huge Graceful vessels vanished forever those efforts and others have been so successful that Square riggers Are still being built.
