Germany helping postal users learn new codes by Joseph Owen Heidelberg Burea americans who get mail at a German address won t have  using new five digit postal codes until july 1, but they can prepare for address changes now by finding out what the proper codes Are. The German postal service announced All its new codes last week and has set up a Telephone number that customers can dial toll free within Germany to ask about them. The 24-hour number is 0130-55555. The Post office also said it will notify each postal customer of code changes Early this month and w ill deliver a free copy of a National postal code directory to each household in May. Computer software Al ready is available to help Large companies and organizations update their address lists. The five digit codes will replace a 32-year-old, four digit system that German unification made obsolete in 1990. In Many cases tie first one or two digits in the code will not re Iange.
