Up Bill Elliott struggling through a horrendous season received a boost Friday by winning the pole position for sunday s diehard 500 Lascar Winston cup Auto race at Talladega us per Speedway. This is the second pole in two Days at Talladega for Elliott thursday he earned a Busch grand National pole and set a track record during qualifying for saturday s Lascar Fram filter 500-Kilometer race. In Friday s qualifying Elliott drove his Budweiser sponsored Ford thunderbird to a Lap of 192.397 Miles an hour on the 2.66 Elliott mile High banked facility to take the pole away from Chevrolet Driver Ernie Irvan who ran a Lap at 192.359. Elliott benefited from a late qualifying draw when he was the 45th out of 47 cars attempting to weather conditions were slightly cooler in the late afternoon. Olympic festival Light show scorches 30 feet of Canvas san Antonio a the . Olympic festival opening ceremonies started with a bang Friday night and ended that Way but dragged a bit in Between. A fireworks and laser show climaxing the ceremony in the Alam dome set fire to a Canvas cover protecting wire leading to the stage where the olympic cauldron stood. Firefighters put out the Small fire with extinguishers and then a fire Hose drawing one of the bigger cheers of the night. About 30 feet of Canvas was scorched. No one was injured. Four thousand athletes cheered by hundreds of cheerleaders and throngs of fans marched out to open the ceremony. We feel san Antonio has gone from a City not capable of holding this event in 1987 to one of the top sports cities in the United the City wanted to serve As Host of the 1987 festival but its bid was rejected. Coleman said there were two reasons not enough facilities and organization in place that showed it could put on such an event. Since losing the festival bid san Antonio has built about $250 million in new facilities the biggest being the Alam Domei which opened in May.
