The route snakes left and right before reaching wednesday Market now used As an overflow for saturday Market. In the far right Corner the cobbles of Highgate Mark the final approach to the Minster. Along this Street the famous Cross fair was held every year. The fair lasted 10 Days and must have been a very important event because londoners owned houses along Highgate formerly called londoners Street and came up for the festivities. This tradition lasted More than 400 years until the late 17th Century when the old houses were modernized and new ones built in the latest style a georgian. The Minster now a colossal Structure with Cornucopia of statues gargoyles and flying buttresses was built As a memorial to St. John of Beverley. John was a Monk at Whitby before becoming Bishop of Hexham and later of York. While at York he founded a monastery at Beverley then just a Forest and died there in 721. The town became a place of pilgrimage for those who believed in his miracles and wished to visit his Tomb. The most impressive feature of the Minster rebuilt in 1220 is its Silhouette a Beautiful aesthetic vision created by the twin towers the buttresses and the plethora of Small towers and windows. The Overall effect is Best appreciated from the South Side across a Grassy Field on the Corner of Long Lane. Standing under the West Side is also impressive a the twin towers soar up toward the heavens looking like magnificent examples of medieval skyscrapers. Inside the Minster contains the Tomb of St. John marked by a Black plaque on the floor near the choir. There s also a Sanctuary chair where medieval criminals could Avail themselves of the Church s mercy a and perhaps the most interesting feature of All a series of carved Misericord the shelved seats in a choir that allow a person to be supported even when apparently standing up. These show the humor of the craftsman who carved cameos of various contemporary scenes including a Man with a muzzled Bear a Monkey saying its prayers and a Fox preaching to a congregation of geese because the Minster was the main cause of Beverley a growing Prosperity the town grew up around it. Houses still Cluster around the Minster topped by red Pantiles and Brick chimneys. Not far away Are the remains of the old friary. This was formerly a vast building and the refectory All that remains is now used As the town s youth Hostel. Also within the Vicinity of the Minster is Beverley Beck a canal that allowed the town s doth Trade to Prosper and the industries of weaving dyeing and tanning to thrive. Today however the Beck is virtually derelict a just a few barges and Small Craft gliding quietly toward the River Hull. For the connoisseur of history religious buildings and architecture Beverley is a Joy and its proximity to the East coast the unspoiled natural splendours of the Yorkshire moors and to pretty villages and cities such As Hull and York make it a splendid base.
