By Phyllis s. Johnson one of the most famous ski runs in the Alps is truly an adventure even for an experienced skier. It is the Vallee Blanche White Valley " run from near the top of Mont Blanc All the Way into Chamonix one of the oldest so resorts in the French Alps. Depending on your guide the Snow conditions and your ability the run is Between 71/2 and 10 Miles Long. This is definitely not a ski run you tackle unprepared. You must have a guide the right outfit the right weather and be accustomed to lofty Heights. After All Mont Blanc is the highest Mountain in Western Europe at 15,771 feet mount Elbrus in Georgia s caucasus mountains is Europe s highest at 18,510 feet. There Are two ways to reach the plateau near the top. One is from Chamonix and the other is from Cou Mayeur an italian resort right on the other Side of the Mont Blanc Tunnel. Getting to the top can be a Challenge breathing becomes difficult in the thin air and the climb while carrying skis and poles is precarious. And once you fasten your skis the thrill of the big adventure makes breathing even More difficult especially if you be noticed that the two guides with your group have fastened something like parachutes anchored Between their legs on their backs. The guides said these devices were required by Law on this unprepared and treacherous Trail. They added that Glacier pits and avalanches often change the terrain Over night and that with these devices guides can pull someone out of an icy Gap. Then there were More instructions no overtaking the skier ahead no going out of the line made by the guide no shouting and use extreme caution not to fall. And we had already been briefed on the importance of Good equipment including Strong Sun goggles and sturdy ski clothes.
