Our group flew into Stockholm then took an afternoon flight to Osterlund followed by a three hour bus ride to Are the next Day. The mountains of Are have something for All types of skiers. The ski area known As Aref Jallen is considered one of the Best in Northern Europe with Good reason. It features Large Frozen lakes framed by Woods and appears to sit on top of a White world. The ski terrain is Large and offers 100 groomed ski runs with about 55 Miles serviced by 60 ski lifts plus More than 185 Miles of prepared ski tracks and uncountable Miles of marked trails for ski touring. After spending Many years skiing in Alpine surroundings we were impressed by such vast and untouched White spaces. A different ski feeling. There were also fewer crowds and if one run looked crowded there was another one to take with hardly a skier on it. We had warm and sunny weather and wonderful Snow. If the Snow is scarce we were told Snow making machines will ensure skiing on the major slopes from late november on. There was not enough time for All the activities offered in Are. Dog sledding Reindeer sledding ice fishing we never saw a fish being caught but it s a wonderful Way to Admire the Countryside around you and snowmobiling and rally Type driving with spiked tires. All of these available on Frozen lakes. And last but by no Means least some Cross country skiing along the trails dotting the whole Countryside. Our impression of the local people was a positive one.
