Although the fighting took place Over a greater area than the town of Bastogne the symbolic turning Point of the Battle is marked by the moment . It. Gen. George s. Patton s 4th army div led by it. Abrams tank battalion opened a corridor to Bastogne and broke the German ring around the town on dec.26,1944.  ,.vthe Battle of the bulge was one of the greatest German attacks in the West involving More thai 200,000 men and ultimately 1 million. There s not a family in town that does t have sad memories of the War said Beatrice Cenni  works at the tears of liberation museum in the Center of town. The museum displays items ranging from photographs of Bastogne families that were taken during the War to shells and other Battlefield debris. Supreme court s 1954 decision on school desegregation. On sept. 20, 1957, a Federal judge ordered him to Stop interfering. Three Days later the nine Blacks entered Central High through a Side door breaking the color line while police struggled with rioters at Barri Cades holding Back 1,000 Whites. The Black pupils were removed from school for their safety. Eisenhower  had federalized the guard to Dis solve Faubus control Over it then sent 1,200 paratroops to protect the Little Rock nine in their re entry to the school. The students entered Central High the next Day through the front door while an army helicopter Hov ered overhead and rioting Whites were subdued by bayonets and blows from Rifle Butts by the 350 soldiers of the 101st airborne div  ringed the school. The sol Diers stayed through the school year. Little Rock voters in a special election closed the schools for the 1958-59 school year but opened them again the following year. Faubus a conservative Democrat won six consecutive terms for a record 12 straight years As governor one month longer than Bill Clinton. He attempted three comebacks but voters denied him the nomination each time selecting Dale bumpers in 1970, David Pryor in 1974 and Clinton in 1986.
