These and other thoughts come to mind during a visit to the Mammoth exhibition at the Hessen state museum in Darmstadt Germany. Exhibits showing the above scene Complete with the Bone hut various animal skeletons and a replica of the hairy mammoths and human Hunters Are just part of the attraction that brought 15,270 visitors including lots of schoolchildren during the first 11 Days of the show but the real Star of the exhibit is Dima a baby Mammoth that died around 40,000 years ago in Siberia. It was preserved by the ice that covered it and As a result its leathery looking skin is in remarkably Good condition. It is is photos by Dave Casey now kept in a museum in Russia with other siberian finds. About two thirds of the pieces in the Darmstadt exhibit were found in Russia and Ukraine and Lent to the museum for this show. The rest of the items Are from the museum s permanent display. The exhibit continues through feb. 19. According to museum officials no other Sites Are planned for the display after it completes its Darmstadt run. The Hessi Sches Landes museum is at Friedens Platz 1, and is open daily except mondays from 10 . To 5 .
