Jordan jr., executive director of the National Urban league it took a bit of doing to successfully quarterback the first meeting of the nation s principal Black leaders in More than a  main Factor that made the meeting possible was Jordan s Strong and pointed criticism of the Carter administration. After he used the Urban league s annual conference As a platform from which to assail the administration s policies pro Grams and actions Jordan won amens from leaders of the major civil rights Orga  appeared that the time was right for a Summit conference and Jordan sensed it. A sense of timing sound political judg ment deft handling of one s Peers and elders Are vital traits for a successful Black  has managed As head of the 67 year old Urban league to avoid the Pitfalls that Black leaders often face. For instance at the meeting with 14 other leaders Jordan did not sit at the head of the table or at the foot but in the Middle. He insisted on a Low profile for himself and the Urban league in relation to the meeting. Jordan was named head of the league in 1971 at a time of relative quiescence by civil rights organizations. The league s previous executive director Whitney m. Young jr., had drowned the Rev.  Luther King or. Had been assassinated a few years earlier and the Southern Christian leadership conference was  aging Roy Wilkins executive director of the National association for the advancement of coloured people was moving toward retirement. The Rev. Jesse  was organizing his people United to save humanity. The expanding number of United states representatives who were Black gave Rise to the congressional Black caucus which took a few years to shake itself Down to acquire its role in the 1970s struggle for Black Equality. The joint Center for political studies a Black study organization in Washington was created to reinforce Black rhetoric with research and  new leadership is now secure with its own constituency Jordan said recently the metamorphosis of Black leaderships now Complete. Thus he said leaders of organizations and groups that have been pursuing the same goals and objectives can now come together. Jordan is paid $60,000 As the executive director of the Urban league and Bis position has catapulted him into the corporate boardrooms. Jordan is a member of the Board of directors for Bankers Trust the celanese corp., j. C. Penney Xerox the Mit corp.,Clark College the John Hay Whitney foun Dation the Atlanta University Center corporation the Taconic foundation the Rockefeller foundation Columbia presbyterian Hospital and on the Day after he criticized president Carter s administration he was elected As a Board member of american  membership on most of these boards he said is what Black people asked for in the 1960s participation in the Deci Sion making councils especially As it re lates to economic political and educational  complained about the Lack of opportunities for  i am a chief executive officer a lawyer a businessman dealing with Bud gets so it is natural he said that he should be on such boards. This is participation in the mainstream of american  and being a corporate director he said is not inconsistent with anything that he  is Able to sit on the corporate boards and bring the leaders with delicate organizational egos together because among other things he has a warm Polit ical style that wins friends. He knows that he can loudly pro claim that president Carter has Dis appointed and neglected Black voters and yet he does not doubt that his fellow georgian and Friend will some Day Stop again in the Jordan Home As he did last fall when he was campaigning in Westchester county for Chicken and  food in the Jordan Home is natural.
