The Cincinnati reds third baseman has collected 200 or More hits in eight seasons. Cobb did it in nine seasons. What i need is a couple of three hit games or one four hit game Rose says. After monday night s game against the Houston astros in which he got two hits Rose needed 31 hits in 24 remaining games. Rose has figured just what it will take to reach 200. About 10 hits Over .250 the rest of the Way he said before the game. Ill get about 112 More at bats and i need those 33 Rose thinks he has to hit .295 the rest of the season to reach Cobb s record. If he does t make 200 hits this year he is optimistic the record will be tied next season. I see no reason Why he might already have tied the record except that the 1972 season was shortened by eight games due to the players strike. That season he recorded 198 200-hit Mark is not the Only thing Rose is shooting for. He wants a 12th .300 season. He was averaging .303 going into monday night s game. It has been a strange year in that he traditionally hits better left handed than right handed but this year he is far below .300 from the left Side. It s something i just can t explain Rose said. After the All Star break i lost the stroke from the left Side and Haven t been Able to get it Back. Funny too be cause usually when i m hot from one Side i m also hot from the another puzzling phenomenon for Rose has been the number of runs he has scored this season. I Lead the team in hits doubles triples have a career High in stolen bases and have gotten my Normal number of walks yet i m fourth on the team in runs Tracy reaches open quarters continued from Page 21 Gerulaitis.
