The people who planned lives for new Yor City residents at the time had decided that a new High school was to be built in Corona and in order to make room for the athletic Field a group of 69 one family Homes had to be condemned. Many of these houses had been built by the people who lived in them and they were talking about stopping the bulldozers with dynamite. Hie meeting on this night was held Ina Volunteer ambulance Hall and it was almost As Good As it promised to be. There was smoke and shouting and wonderful fist waving. At the close of the meeting the lawyer forthe group stood up. He had been sitting on the Side All night without saying a word. His name was Mario Cuomo and he was big but his voice was polished. He said that he would no assess the situation As he saw it. Cuomo began talking about a Complex Legal matter that had been going in and out of courts for a couple of years. He talked in simple declarative sentences with excellent verb choices to make the sentences interesting and move them along. The sentences connected to each other to form a flow. His explanation of a difficult Legal problem was so precise that All the people in the Hall understood. He would not raise Hopes. He consistently said it appeared impossible to help them but he would continue to try. I decided to stay around the Corona fight with Cuomo. He had been in it for three years. He was doing it for no Money and negligible publicity. But he had a reason and the first time he was Able to get into a meeting in City Hall he gave his reason. He looked at Dick Aurelio then the Deputy mayor and Ronni Eldrige then an assistant and he told them you know these people Are  the discussions began Cuomo wanted the City to Cut the size of the High school ath Letic Field. Aurelio nodded. But that still leaves these houses Over Here Aurelio said pointed to a Row of houses on a Street map. They would have to go. And your people say that they want All the houses saved or they won t accept a ," Cuomo said. We re saving this Row of houses ?" he was asked. Like this Cuomo said. He took an Ash Jimmy tray and moved it across the table. You can move the houses from one Side of the Street and place them into empty lots Here Here and  his Finger tapped the  remember everybody in the room looking at him. Now they were the ones who were saying who the people who lived in the Corona houses then live in the same houses now. Houses were moved from one Side of the Street to the other without breaking. And that ashtray moving across the table in City Hall did More to change the thinking and Laws of condemnation in this country than anything that has happened in years. I guess it was a year and a half later when iwas sitting at the bar in Gallagher s on 52nd Street in Manhattan and Aurelio stopped by total. New York City at that time had on its hands the Forest Hills Queens housing controversy. It was the one most dangerous racial situation we have had in this City. The City planners had decided to place three 24 Story Low income housing buildings in the midst of a White Middle class area. Jews live in Forest Hills a City planner had said. Jews Are Liberal. They la never , after the police emergency units cleared the streets in Forest Hills the Cit knew the Depths of its problem. Presidential candidates visited the area and made the scatter site housing project a National Issue i remember the Liberal George Mcgovern look ing at the crowd in Forest Hills and coming out against the housing  Don t you let Cuomo handle it for you i said to  a Nice Guy like that into the Middle of a racial situation Aurelio said. I though you told me that he ought to have a career in this  should i said. That s Why you ought to put him in there. This Guy Only belong where everybody else is  Aurelio saw to it that the mayor appointed Cuomo a special mediator Between the White Community and the City and the Blacks. Beheld night Long meetings and talked about race to All White gatherings. We do not have Inthis City a White politician with the spinal Cord to do such a  the end Cuomo had the project reduced in size but not done away with. He said it had to be built because the poor of the City needed it and it still has not tipped racially. We cannot afford to do nothing while we wait to do everything Cuomo  than being damaged by the Job of mediating Between Blacks and Whites Cuomo came out As a figure of great strength in this City. And now he runs for mayor Ana Here theother morning he was climbing out of a car at Steinway Street in Astoria Queens squinting in the Bright summer Sun at the Start of a Campaign  White haired woman stood by the Man with the bullhorn and watched him Wal toward her. I know what she wants to talk about Cuomo said. All Over television and the newspapers Andin All the talk by politicians is the Story of the securities and Exchange commission report on new York City s finances. The report states that mayor Abraham d. Beame among other interested parties actually did for the first time in history sell somebody the Brooklyn Bridge. But Cuomo who comes from the streets of a neighbourhood knew that the woman on the Corner was interested in something a bit More immediate to her thana 800-Page government report. Hello i m Mario Cuomo he said As he reached the Corner. And i m 75 and i can t go in the evenings to the movies the woman said. Why can t we have capital punishment so i can go in the evening to the movies my Mother and father Are 75," Cuomo said. The electric chair won t protect them. They need More out of the criminal Justice system than a Symbol. They need More police More judges and better judges judges who will Send people to jail and keep them there. I have three daughters. If i thought that the electric chair would protect them from harm i d push the Button myself. But it does t protect my parents or my daughters. All it does i reduce us to the level of a murderer.
