European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 07, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 the stars and stripes wednesday september 7, 1977 everything to lose nothing to gain Rose says i Cage Powers shun Charlotte by Ben Abrams staff write Wiesbaden is they Don t want any part of us. They say they have every thing to lose and nothing to gain by playing Lee Rose head basketball coach and athletic director at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte made those state ments tuesday at the Safe basketball clinic being held in the Rocker club Here. Rose along with Alabama coach . Newton and Joe Shosid Veteran basketball official who is currently the supervisor of officials for the metro seven conference is in Europe to conduct the annual Safe clinic Here and at Mildenhall England. They1 Are the colleges and universities which Nave established basketball reputations Over the years and resent the pres ence of he upstart Small colleges like Unic that have been carving successful niches on the court of late. Scheduling biggest problem so. Because of their unwillingness to play us scheduling is the biggest problem we face Rose whose Unic team reached the semifinals of the National collegiate athletic association basketball championships last february said. We be been Able to get games with some of the basketball Powers but it s been strictly on their terms. Last year for example we played Wake Forest. The game was originally scheduled at Winston Salem where some 7,000 fans could have seen the game. But it was moved to the Greensboro coliseum which seats 15,000 people. Tickets went at $5 apiece and the place was jammed. They netted something like $58,000 and our guarantee was Only $3,000. I can t see where any fair play or equity was involved. After the game the people in the press Section wanted to know How i Felt playing a team from the acc which had everything to lose and nothing to gain by scheduling us and i said we played them at their place with their officials and they won the game. Just what in the world did they lose11 Rose continued. Cincinnati where i used to be an assistant coach said they d play me four games Over two years but they wanted All four at Cincy. Some Deal we open at Illi Laughlin starlings capture crowns in Dodd eur Golf meet Garmisch Germany Mannheim s Dee Laughlin and Cable starlings walked off with the individual championships in the fifth annual Dodd eur staff Golf tournament played Here Over the weekend. Laughlin shot 95-88183 to win her third straight championship beating out Kaiserslautern s Sieglinde Djuren by three strokes. Kaiserslautern s Carmel Fine was third with a 191 total. Starlings won his second title in the last live years. He won the inaugural tournament missed the last three years and re turned in 1977 to shoot 78-77155, beating out Wurzburg s Bob Knych Champion in 1974 and 1975, by five strokes. Coaches of year get together at Safe Cage clinic Nois this year and also play at Mississippi but those games were filled when we were trying to build a representative schedule and we had to accept very Low Guaran tees he added. I tried to get on the Marquette schedule and Al Maguire told me he d never play us under any conditions but then he was forced to play us last March in the semifinals of the Mcaa. We did t need any incentive to get up for that game when you reach the final four in the Mcaa you Don t have to worry about getting your kids unfortunately for Rose and his cagers Marquette ended the Unic National championship ambitions in the semifinals and went on to win the title. However Rose was named College basketball coach of the year by the sporting news for his team s achievements. The Small schools Aren t really that Small any More Rose pointed out. We be joined with some other schools and formed the Sunbelt conference and with an enrol ment of 8,000 people we re the second smallest school in the Jacksonville with some 5,000 is the smallest. Other schools in the new Confer ence Are University of South Florida at Tampa 23,000university of new or leans 14,000university of Southern Ala Bama at Mobile 12,000 and Georgia state at Atlanta 21,000. Forming the conference definitely will help the scheduling and we feel that it will be one of the Good basketball conferences in the country within the next few years Rose said. We Hope to receive automatic Mcaa bid qualification after two years so our Champion can go directly into the tournament. Meanwhile we Hope we have successful programs and Are invited to compete in the Mcaa schools like Unic and its conference compatriots have come into their own of late with the help of the Mcaa which has restricted the number of scholarships col Leges and universities can offer. Up to a few years ago schools could offer 25 scholarships but the Mcaa Cut that limit to 15 and that meant that 10 people who might be Riding the benches at aces like Urcla Michigan Kentucky Orth Carolina and All those other schools suddenly became available and the effect has been that there was More Talent to be spread around. Basketball As you Well know is very big in America and schools like Charlotte have been Able to develop outstanding pro Grams. We still can t compete on equal footing with the basketball Powers for the top 10 or 12 kids in America but we at least have a shot at some of the other Talent that has become available Rose added. Ironically one of the stars who led Unic to the Mcaa semifinals was untre cruised. Cedric Cornbread Maxwell did t make his High school team and came to Unic on his own. He went out for basketball and made the team but was t too impressive until last year when Rose changed Unic s offensive tactics. I inherited Cornbread when i came to Charlotte two years ago and was impressed with his ability to shoot the Basket Ball. So i tailored my offence to Best use his ability. We did t restrict his shooting. What we did was to convert him from a Center who did t get the Ball to one we took the Ball to and he came into his own and was tremendous. He also developed into our Best bal handler and i never hesitated to use him to bring the Ball Down court against the press. No one could handle him one on one. We lost our last two games in the Mcaa tournament and he tied for second in the balloting for the map in the finals. We Felt honoured Rose said. University of North Carolina at Char Lotte has been improving its basketball program Over the last 12 years but it has crested the last two years under Rose s guidance. In 1976, the team went to the nit tournament and last year of course it was Mcaa time. Rose expects to have another Fine team this year what with three out standing performers returning. We Nave the nucleus for another Good team. I have Lew Massi Chad Kinch and Kevin King Back and we have several other Fine performers coming up from the second team he said. Massi was the leading scorer the two years before Max took Over last year Kinch is a super Sopho More guard and King is an outstanding defensive player a great blender a complement to any As athletic director Rose has encountered the problems of installing a women s sports program at the school. He says Unic s women compete on the intercollegiate level in Bowling Golf Tennis Volley Ball softball and basketball. Strong women s program a women s program was initiated at Charlotte before i came there and we offer All sports in which there appears to be a definite interest. Women s basketball is pretty big but we Haven t had much inter est in track and Field As yet. A couple of women asked about a track and Field pro Gram but two people Don t constitute enough interest As far As i m concerned. We re willing to expand the program and i expect we will have More interest in a women s program within the next few years whenever enough interest is shown. I feel there have to be three things present to add a new sport to any program Defi Nite student interest coaching personnel available and adequate funding. If enough interest develops i m sure Unic officials will enlarge the program again he said. Rose played football basketball and baseball at Henry Clay High school in Lexington ky., and went on to Transylvania College where he played basketball and later was an assistant coach under Newton. Succeeded former coach after College he coached a year at ver Sailles ky., High school before becoming an aide to Newton at Transylvania. Then he moved to Cincinnati As an assistant to Tay Baker and when Newton left Transylvania to take the Job at Alabama he re turned to his Alma mater and succeeded his former coach. He stayed at Transylvania for seven years before moving to Char Lotte. I be really been fortunate Over the years. I be had the material and my teams went to naia playoffs five times in division ii once in division Iii the National invitational tournament and last year the final four of the Mcaa. I Don t know of any other coach who has had such a Golden Opportunity said Rose. Racing Roundup continued from Page 25 port on oct. 9, and the japanese finale at Fuji circuit on oct. 23.
