Since a aggressive physical training program is an army wide requirement i have to Admire this Early morning alternative to interfering with prime training time whatever that is. For those of us who live a Good distance from work there s the hassle of driving Home for a Shower and then returning during a Peak traffic period. Mileage and fuel consumption is More than doubled but fuel is cheap and plentiful. Jack c. White 41st a detachment postal Apo new York 09189 Slovik s insurance i am commenting on the decision by Secretary Clifford Alexander to prevent mrs. Slovik from receiving her husband s government life insurance. Why Are we continuing to punish mrs. Slovik her husband died because the army made an example of him. Well he s dead and nothing will bring him Back. Mrs. Slovik did nothing and what does it Hurt for her to get a Little compensation for the Many years of grief the government after All can surely afford it. Look at All the Money we waste on corrupt congressmen. Secretary Alex Ander seems like a Man with Little compas Sion and i have no respect for such a Man. Give her what is entitled to her. I like swimming softball baseball rollerskating and basketball. Also i am in the seventh Grade. Kathy Jean Sarnak 328 Hall Street Phoenixville a. 19460 being a student enrolled in the Ameri can preparatory Institute api i think the Way the classrooms operate is unreal. It s a self Pace course which i and the teachers i have had think is a weak pro Gram. The teacher s participation is Noth ing. I Don t blame this on the teachers who i believe would like to throw these study guides out the window and teach the Way they did in the program before api. The teachers seemed to have More control Over classroom behaviour then than they do now. Teacher involvement was emphasized More than it is now which made studies a lot better. Before when the classes were run As a whole. Moral alertness and concentration were filling the atmosphere. Now mos students i have seen in this self Pace api program that i m enrolled in spend most of their class time sleeping spamming or Reading Playboy. If the armed forces want to educate us they should t spend Money on students copying to get their diplomas. Give the teachers their roles again in doing a Fine Job As they did in not enough Birndorf Germany editor s note Richard s. Kneisel Usa eur director of general education Al development ged replies in the last statement this writer suggests we give the teachers their roles again that is a key to adult education and accordingly is what i would like to address in this reply the teacher s role in education. In the traditional non adult setting that which most of us experienced during High school the teacher has a number of roles. One of the major ones is the disciplinarian. Young students coming into class must be settled before starting reawakened when their attention starts to wander and held in place As they eagerly await the Bell. In Between the teacher has to Deal with classroom interruptions note pass ing spit balls non pertinent questions and the never ending teacher May i be excused All this takes time away from the learning process hence the traditional school year of 180-190 Days or a minimum of 90 hours in class for each credit. Prisoner s plea i sure would appreciate your help. I would like to get some pen pals. Meanwhile i m in a German jail. I m 21, and i still have to pull a few months in jail. Please help me get a few pen pals. Jim Geisler 8851 Nieder Schoenefeldt a in a sense learning was equated with time spent when in fact learning can be Independent of time alone. In adult Educa Tion programs the adult student should no longer need a teacher disciplinarian to get started or keep going. What the adult student does need is teacher in the role of educator that is someone who guides the student through the instructional material explains and assists with difficult items discuss issues allowing the student to develop and expand ideas and finally evaluates the Progress the student has made. Concentration on the learning process allows us to Cut Down the number of class hours and to award credit based on the work done. This Means a student normally earns one credit in 60 hours but could earn More if he can work ahead and meet the additional skill requirements. Obviously from this student s com ments and from our own experience we realize that what i have described is a Ideal situation. Teachers who Are used to traditional classrooms find it difficult to put responsibility for classroom behaviour with the student and students have difficulty accepting it. Because of this the two institutions conducting High school completion courses american preparatory Institute api and big Bend Community College have conducted a number of teacher train ing seminars to Orient their instructors to this new style of teaching. Teachers in turn should be helping their students make the transition from High school to adult education. Ultimately however the responsibility for learning does fall on the student. Those who do not want to accept it who sleep Sham and copy will be identified and not permitted to re enrol. The concerns of this writer in this area have already been transmitted to the institutions providing the High school pro Grams As Well As to the army education personnel so that there is no waste of re sources. The policy army is to give every sol Dier the Opportunity to earn a diploma. The Soldier must decide How to use the Opportunity. We will insure that the Best systems for this Opportunity Are in effect. In the Long run the self paced program should be better for teacher and student because it allows them to assume their proper roles and treats both As adults. We in the education Field Are gratified to know that this writer is dedicated and so vitally interested in education.
