Sleek sure and fast he ran off and left the top runners in the world and he made it look easy. Competing against the likes of Frank Shorter and Marty Liquori of the unite states Karl Flescher of Germany and Jos Hermens of the Netherlands the Diminu Tive african was smaller in size Only. Scarcely 5-foot-5, and weighing 130pounds, the native of Asmara who Speaks no English but makes himself understood very Well on the track runs with a relaxed fluid motion that is deceptive because of the apparent ease with which he takes Long strides. Short men normally just Don to stride like he does. Even before the two distance races Here he was touted As the Man to watch and if either Shorter or Liquori beat him the were going to have to be in top form. Yifter s performance this year has Bee impressive if not overpowering. In Dis Tance races he has lost Only one his Trainer Legessie Roba said. He has been develop ing Over the last half dozen years and i just coming into full Bloom. In the 1976 olympics yifter was caught up in the african pullout but that in no Way held him Back from other Competition. So when he arrived Here the stage was set for a classic confrontation with american olympic Marathon Gold and Silver medal Winner Shorter who is no Slouch in the 10, 000 race and with Liquori hungry for a bigwig in the 5,000 after washing out of the olympic trials last year with an wasted no time showing How it was going to be.
