Tribe s Carty selected Al player of the week new York a Rico Carty of the Cleveland indians who belted three Home runs and drove in 13 runs last week was named the american league s player of the week for the period covering aug. 22 28, the Al office announced monday. Eliminated by much older Veteran but she s not crying tiny Tracy 14, is disappointed but makes no excuses Over defeat by Milton Richman Forest Hills . Up she had gone As far As she possibly could As far As the natural limitations of her skill and experience would allow conducting herself like some fully grown adult throughout and now that it was All Over pig tailed Tracy Austin automatically reverted to precisely what she was a disappointed14-year-old Little girl. I m so Little she said. What she really meant was she was so Young. She did t cry nor did she make any excuses Over being swept aside and eliminated from the . Open 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals by much More seasoned 32 year old Betty stove of the Netherlands but the enormous letdown which had to be inside her was plainly obvious by the Fara Way look in her porcelain Blue eyes and the Wistful Way she kept rubbing her Tongue against her Teeth. Betty stove a finalist at Wimbledon against Virginia Wade Only three months ago systematically gave Little Tracy Austin a lesson in fundamental Tennis Here wednesday and did it 56 minutes with a thoroughly professional assortment of drop shots lobs and Power placements Down the line. Stove went on to win the firs set More or less As she pleased after break ing Tracy s service in the fifth game and won the second set even More easily after breaking service in the third game. To the 11,799 on hand for the match the 5-foot, 95-Pound Tracy looked like the Little girl on the Prairie wearing the red and White checked Cotton dress made especially for her by her Mother. To the 6 foot-1, strictly no nonsense stove she looked Only like the the crowd was with Tracy All the Way and showed it too by the manner in which it cheered stove s errors in the opening game of the first set. I m always in the Home of the enemy she said referring to the fact she has to play most of her Tennis away from the Netherlands where they Don t hold that Many tournaments and when we started off and the crowd applauded my mistakes i thought they weren t As honest As they were at stove readily understood the sentimental feeling the crowd had toward Tracy be cause of her age and conceded How she might have had that same feeling toward her teen age opponent a few years ago but not anymore. If i played her five six years ago i d probably be very sentimental and i Proba Bly would have lost to her said stove. As it was i knew exactly what i was going to do and How i was going to play against her. It was a very difficult match. I had to concentrate extra hard. Actually never saw Tracy on the other Side i Only saw the Tracy listened intently to the Veteran dutch player As she talked in the interview area and when it came her turn to explain How she Felt the ninth grader from rolling Hills calif., confessed stove simply had been too much for her. She just overpowered me said Tracy who still wears braces on her Teeth. There was nothing i could do. I could barely get her serve Back i m so Little. I d barely get her serve Back and she d hit it there were times during the match when Tracy did t seem to have her mind completely of the business at hand times when she looked distracted. She did t Getto Many of stove s shots anywhere As quickly As she did in beating West Ger Many s Heidi Eisterlehner Donna Ganz of Miami Beach and fourth seeded sue Barker of England in her earlier matches Here. Was she tired no she said. I did t run All during her time at the open Here Austin kept saying she had nothing to lose. If she won that was Fine and if she did to Well that was Tennis. But she has had a taste of what it is like to win now and she is Likely to get better As she goes along the same Way Chris Ever did after she made her first big splash Here at the open a few years Back. Possibly Argentina s Guillermo Vilas said it Best wednesday after defeating Ray Moore of South Africa 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, in their quarterfinal match and he was asked How he Felt regarding his chances of going All the Way. Once you win one you want to win an other one said Vilas. It s the same As a Guy who never eats. One Day he eats bread the next Day he wants a Sandwich. The next Day he wants Steak and the Day after that he wants to go to the Palace and have them build a statue for him in the Middle of Buenos Digregorio s knee injury is completely rehabilitated continued from Page 21 during his second year of professional basketball in 1974-75.
