One out away from defeat in the ninth inning the Yankees tied the score 3-3, on a two run single by Mickey Rivers. Indians starter Wayne Garland had pitched shut out Ball for eight innings before Chris Chambliss led off the ninth inning for new York with a bunt single and went to second when Garland threw the Ball into right Field. Chambliss moved to third on Roy White s infield out and scored on a single by Willie Randolph. Another infield out moved the runners up before Rivers single. Then i the 10th, Munson chased Garland with a Lead off single and scored when Bochte chased Down another single by Reggie Jackson in Loftfield and pro ceded to hit Munson in the Back with his throw. Munson scored the winning run As the Ball rolled into the Yankee dugout. Take ten innings out of this season and it s a different Story said the disgusted Garland. I should have 15 wins not 18 losses. It s getting to be a joke now. If i took my time on Chambliss bunt i might have got  meanwhile the red sox who can ill afford to drop any one run games to expansion teams had their five game winning Streak snapped by Lemanczyk who prior to this season has never distinguished him self anywhere but in the newspaper com posing rooms where typesetters struggled to spell his name correctly. Any combination of los Angeles victories or Cincinnati de feats totalling 11 will give the dodgers their first division title since 1974. Giants 6, reds 3 Willie Mccovey the leading candidate for no comeback of the year honors drove in four runs with a double his 2,000th career hit and his 489th lifetime Homer to spark the giants Victory Over the reds. Winning Pitcher de Halicki also homered for the giants while George Foster nit his 46th and Joe Morgan his 22ndfor the reds. Phillies 6, met s 2 Larry Christenson allowed Only two hits in pitching the Phillies to Victory Over the mets. The Phillies supported Christenson with a 10-hit attack which included a Home run by Jay Johnstone and the Victory enabled Philadelphia to retain its six game Lead Over Pittsburgh in the no East. Pirates 5, cardinals 4 Bill Robinson doubled Home two runs and scored two others to Lead the pirates Over the cardinals. Robinson doubled Home two runs and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and scored again in the third. Ted Simmons and Keith Hernandez homered for St. Louis. Padres 9, astros 5 Dave Roberts drove in four runs with a double and a Homer to help the padres snap the astros nine game winning Streak at the Astrodome. George Hendrick also homered for the padres while Rollie Fin Gers notched his 32nd save Only five Short of the no record. Expos 4, cubs 2 Tony Perez knocked in two runs with a double then scored on Gary Carter s single in the fourth As the expos spoiled Rick Reuschel s bid to reach the 20-Victory Pla teau. Stan Bah san went 6 2-3 innings to gain credit for his eighth Victory in 15 Deci Sions. Troit said Boston manager Don Zimmer. Hell he s got eleven wins for an expansion club. That s More than any Pitcher on my  Lemanczyk kept the Ball Down through out the game inducing Boston hitters to ground into three inning ending double plays. Elsewhere in the american league Baltimore split a doubleheader with Detroit winning the first game 6-2 and dropping the Nightcap 12-5 Texas upended Minnesota 4-3 California put away Milwaukee 4 1 Chicago downed Oakland 5-1, and Kansas City topped Seattle 10-7. Orioles 6-5, tigers 2-11 tigers Rookie Catcher Lance Parrish playing in Only his second major league game drove in four runs with a bases loaded double and his first big league Homer in the Nightcap to drop the third place orioles 4vfe games behind the Yan Kees in the Al East. The orioles won the opener when their first year Catcher Dave Skaags drove in five runs with a game tying two run single in the seventh and a three run double in the 11th. Royals 10, mariners 7 George Brett went 4-for-4 with three rib while Darrell Porter was 4-for-5 with a pair of Solo homers As the royals maintained their sva game Lead in the Al West by sweeping to their eighth Victory in a Row and 19th in the last 22 games. Joe Lahoud and Frank White each had three hits in the royals 18-hit attack. White sox 5, athletics 1steve Renko and Dave Hamilton combined to four hit Oakland and Don Kessinger and Ralph Garr each drove in two runs to stake the White sox to their third straight win. Renko won his third straight game for the Chison since coming Over from the cubs in late August while Kes Singer had a two run triple in the second and Garr a two run Homer in the ninth. Rangers 4, twins 3willie Horton hit a Solo Homer his 13th, in the second and later doubled Home the godhead run off Minnesota s Ace reliever Tom Johnson 15-7, in the sixth. Dock Ellis went 8 2-3 innings for his eighth win. Mike Hargrove also homered for Texas in the fifth. Angels 4, Brewers 1 Don Baylor swinging one of the hottest bats in the majors with seven hits in his last eight at bats stroked a Homer and a double behind Paul Hartzell s five hit pitching in the California win.
