Dao 17 Al Unser edges Yarboroug Cambridge Junction Mich. A i really did t think i could pull it off " said Al Unser after beating Cale Yarbo rough by the length of a Hood saturday in the 100-mile season opener of the $225,000 International race of champions. The race was stopped and restarted twice once for a frightful crash in which Al Holbert escaped injury and again for a two hour rain delay. The race was the first half of a twin Bill with a 150-mile Indianapolis car race. Unser moved around Yarborough with two laps remaining and managed to hold a car length Lead until the final Lap around the two mile Michigan International Speedway Oval. But Yarborough shot alongside going into the third turn. Both Drivers fought it out Side by Side around the fourth and final turn. Cale beat me to the line every other time i tried that. His car was faster than mine in the Straightaway Unser said. But i figured if i could get close enough to him i could make his car Loose enough to maybe hang onto the Lead across the Stripe. And that s what they crossed the finish line inches apart with Darrell Waltrip scooting in an other car length Back in third. Yarborough had led every other Lap and had managed to break away to a 5va second Lead just before the rain delay at Lap 20. When the race was started again he was unable to regain his advantage. Richard Petty nipped Gunnar Nilsson of Sweden at the finish line for fourth. Gordon Johncock was sixth Mario Andrei to came in inches ahead of Johnny Ruther Ford for seventh. Benny Parsons whose car was damaged in the Holbert Accident sputtered in a Lap Down for ninth. Holbert Tom Sneva and belgian grand prix Driver Jacky icky were All taken out by the Accident which occurred in the second turn of the opening Lap. I was coming out of the turn and wanted to move up to the Wall to catch the draft Holbert related. Something happened on my right rear and i collided with somebody Parsons. I did t even know he was there. It sputtered me into the Wall in a clock Wise direction and i went upside Down from Holbertsr car continued Down the Lengh of the Backstretch More than a half mile on its top showering Sparks and flames from an Oil fire. The series which pits a dozen top inter National Drivers in identically prepared Chevrolet Samaros continues next month with two races on the Road course at Riverside Calif. The series finale is in february on an Oval track in Daytona Beach. Mac phase denies request to set aside Baltimore forfeit loss at Toronto by Gordon Beard Baltimore a american league president Lee Macphail denied saturday a request by the Baltimore orioles to set aside their forfeit loss in a thursday night game at Toronto. Baltimore manager Earl Weaver took the orioles off the Field in. The fifth inning with the orioles trailing 4-0, contending that a Tarpaulin in the Loftfield foul area constituted a hazardous playing condition. The umpires gave Weaver the option of playing the game under protest then or dered a forfeit when the orioles declined to take the Field. Taking a team off the Field and Refus ing to play constitutes a very serious and almost unprecedented action Macphail said in a prepared statement issued before saturday s Baltimore Boston game. Manager Weaver states he did so be cause unusual and very hazardous conditions existed. The situation was not unusual and judgment As to whether or not it very hazardous must rest with the umpires not with the manager of one of the competing teams who has naturally biased objectives Macphail pointed out that the Toronto Warmup Mound which was covered by the Tarp is 12 feet from the foul line and the location was not appreciably different to those in other major league Parks. He said it was customary to cover such Mounds when not in use while the game was in Progress and if rain was falling. He said to his knowledge no one had Ever expressed the opinion before that this was a safety problem. Going into sunday s game he orioles trailed first place new York in the Ameri can league East by 21/a games. I am most disturbed to have any game bearing on the Pennant not played to the final out Macphail s statement said but i cannot find sufficient reasons for setting aside the forfeiture of the game to Toronto As was required by the Macphail said it was his judgment that the circumstances did not justify Weaver taking the team off the Field and refusing to continue play. Blue jays Purchase Hale from dodgers Toronto up the Toronto Blue jays have purchased 24-year-old outfielder John Hale from the los Angeles dodgers for the $20,000 waiver Price. When a player does something Weaver said most managers would take him Asi de and talk to him not releasing anything to the press. Lee Macphail has to do the same with his employees. Then s no sense in chastising a Man in front of the whole country. It looks to the Public like he s Condon ing an Umpire s mistake but you never know what goes on privately. I Hope he has Marty come in at the end of the season and reads the Rule Book to Weaver insisted Springstead was a Good Umpire but added i m not saying he s a Good Crew this is a closed Weaver said now on to the last 15 games.
