The program which began on a limited scope in some Public secondary schools Here last year is to be expanded and introduced As part of a required world history course in the ninth Grade in the City s 26senior High schools and 40 Junior High schools. School officials say the course is the firs of its kind to be made part of the regular curriculum in the Public education system of a major City. The program which was developed by scholars including Franklin h. Littel chairman of the religion department at Temple University has the support not Only of jewish and Community organizations but also of the roman Catholic Arch diocese and of the metropolitan Christian Council the chief protestant organization Here. The protest is led by the Rev. Hans , the German born pastor of the Immanuel lutheran Church and chairman of the German american committee of greater , asserting that the committee rep resents the views of 50,000 German Ameri cans said in an interview at his Church in Northeast Philadelphia that the 127-Pagecurriculum guide prepared for teachers gives the impression that nazis were the Only ones who committed crimes against humanity and that the jews were the Only ones who suffered to any great in the minds of americans the minis Ter said nazi and German is he added that the guide also gave the impression that genocide is mainly a Teu tonic phenomenon and this is what i would Call a falsification of he said that the course should be altered to reduce the amount of material on the jewish holocaust and to add material on what he called genocides by the soviet government by moslem and hindus in Indian the late 1940s, by the communist oriented government in Cambodia and other nations and Are no nazis in our group who deny wrongdoing the minister said. What the nazis did was a heinous crime against humanity but it was never condoned by the German said that jews had been victims of the second largest genocide in history under the nazis while the largest genocide was the murder of 15 million citizens of the soviet Union by their own authorities. He cited Alexander Solzhenitsyn s the Gula archipelago As his source on soviet atrocity figures. We have no argument with ," said Gilbert Bob Public information director of the jewish Community re lations Council which Speaks for 34 of the new York not two Cornell University researchers have identified a sub stance in cigarette smoke that activate the blood clotting system a finding that could explain the link Between cigarette Sand heart attacks. The substance is a protein that is pre sent in both tobacco leaves and cigarette smoke according to a report published inthe current Issue of the journal of experimental research findings open a new Avenue of investigation into the Way cigarette smoking is believed to damage the heart As Well As the lungs and blood ves Sels. In recent years several epidemiological studies have identified cigarette Smo Kingas a risk Factor for heart attacks As Well As for lung cancer and other pulmonary Dis eases. Pathologists have correlated these Verity of arteriosclerosis the disease underlying heart attacks with a history of cigarette smoking. However such links have been base primarily on statistical studies and not on results of biological tests in the , or. Carl g. Becker and or. Theo Dore Dubin who Are experimental pathologists at the new York Hospital Cornell University medical Center Here have re ported results of tests in which a substance called Rutin triggered the blood clothing re action. Rutin was found to activate Factor Xii a blood substance that plays a key role in initiating the clotting process. Holocaust City s major jewish religious civic and cultural organizations. We Don t confuse germans with nazis he said. There willbe no concerted Effort on our part to debate said he would continue his Campaign to have the Board of education delay teaching of the holocaust for one year. Board members and school officials have listened to him he said but have rejected his arguments. He said it was Likely that the committee would continue to publicize its position and that he would not Rule out the possibility of Public demonstrations against the , who has directed and participated in National conferences on the Holo Caust and who helped prepare the curriculum guide said in an interview i think it is unfortunate that a Little group of German americans should be so ignorant of what has been done since the War in West Germany on this blood clots through a Cascade system. In this system Factor Xii triggers the re lease of another substance called Throm bin which in turn is a major activator of platelets the microscopic sized fragment sin blood that help form a clot. The blood clot experiments were an out growth of studies that the Cornell re searchers did on the allergic properties of tobacco. Becker and Dubin identified a Glycoprotein that is a Complex compound that consists of a sugar and protein in tobacco leaves. They reported that it produced an allergic reaction in 12 of 31 Volunteer when injected under their skins. In further studies they identified the Glycoprotein As containing Rutin. Rutin is present in tobacco and a wide variety of other vegetables such As eggplants Green peppers potatoes and tomatoes. And they also identified Rutin in cigarette Rutin is ingested in such foods they Are presumably much less Likely to reabsorbed through the intestines than through the lungs when it is inhaled in cig Arette smoke. The researchers said they Are exploring studies to investigate the role of Rutin containing substances i foods. In Reading scientific papers Dubin said in an interview that he Learned that a sub stance called quercetin was known to activate Factor Xii. Dubin said he also knew that Rutin was composed in part of quercetin. But he said he did not know if the to Bacco containing Rutin would activate Factor Xii. Accordingly the researchers began an other series of experiments that showed that the Rutin in tobacco leaves and cigarette smoke could activate the blood clot Ting results indicated that tobacco could damage the heart and blood vessels in two Days by stimulating the formation of clots and by immunologic smoke is inhaled it gets deep into the lungs and it could produce Small clots and subsequent scarring of the lung tissue Becker , he speculated that inhalation of cigarette smoke could chronically activate cells involved in the immunologic process resulting in destruction of lung Rutin protein is a Small substance and the researchers theorized that when inhaled in cigarette smoke it could easily enter the blood system and circulate to the heart to produce damage Humphrey starts treatments Minneapolis a sen Hubert 11 Humphrey has begun chemical treatments for an inoperable Pelvic cancer tumor that was discovered during surgery a Moith ago.
