Said he made the trip in a 40-foot Ketch by alternating sleep with navigation for three straight nights. De Roos spoke in a radio interview from Point Barrow. Alaska 3,000 Miles North of Here. He said he got a full night s sleep Only on the fourth night. De Roos who now lives in Belgium said he expects to arrive in Vancouver within a month and that he plans to sail around South America possibly making him the first person to circuit navigate the Ameri Cas. De Roos went around the world Between 1972 and 1975, earning a living with articles and films of his global voyage. He began his assault on the Northwest passage last May 21, when he left fal Mouth England. He sailed across the North Atlantic and entered Lancaster sound the starting Point of the passage on aug. 3. He emerged from Amundsen Gulf the ending Point on sept. 5, and passed Point Barrow last wednesday. He said he consid ers himself Safe from pack ice that might trap him for the Winter. The passage took him 2,150 Miles from Lancaster sound through Prince Regent Inlet Bel lot Strait Franklin Strait. James Ross Strait Rasmussen Basin Queen Maud Gulf Dease Strait Coronation Gulf Dolphin and Union Strait and Amundsen Gulf. De Roos main Contact through the Pas Sage was Harry Beardsell a retired air navigator and Amateur radio enthusiast. Beardsell 60, said he was tuning through the different frequencies one Day when he picked up de Roos daily radio broadcast to friends in Belgium. The Lone Sailor reported his daily Posi Tion and weather conditions and assured his wife and four daughters that he was Safe. De Roos also was in Contact with other radio operators and the Canadian ice breaker Pandora throughout his trip through the passage. Beardsell said. Last Friday. De Roos told Beardsell he was crossing a Large Bay on the North Shore of Alaska. High winds Snow Hail and sleet had made his morning Misera ble he said adding that the Leaden skies cleared by afternoon and the sailing was smooth. Beardsell said de Roos had initially planned to Winter the voyage trapped in ice and even had a portable Windmill on the Ketch to charge his batteries heat the boat s Cabin and run his stove. But prolonged periods of sailing Man aged to get him through the passage in one month. On Good Days said Beardsell de Roos made More than 130 nautical Miles. Beardsell quoted de Roos As saying that his Ketch was caught by a 60-knot Gale sept. 1 in Coronation Gulf South of Victoria Island pushing the boat Back for 21.3 Miles. The loss says Beardsell was made up the following Day when the storm dissipated and he made 80 Miles. To keep his sanity under such conditions Beardsell said the Sailor would try to live As normally As possible. For example Beardsell quoted de Roos As telling him that rather than eating meals out of a can the Lone Sailor would set a table with plate Napkin and cutlery and eat a Normal meal. Beardsell said de Roos wife will meet him in Vancouver before the Sailor Jour Neys along the North and South american coasts and Heads for the Antarctic and finally Back to Europe. She was awaiting the results of an Appeal of a 1974 breaking and entering conviction at the jail at the time of the stabbing. Little is serving time in the women s correctional Center in Raleigh for break ing and entering but has been on work re lease since last Spring. This makes her second attempt at parole. A bid for Freedom was rejected late last year reportedly for a violation of prison rules. She has served 26 months of her seven to 10-year sentence for a breaking and entering in Beaufort county.
