European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 10, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 14 the stars and stripes sunday september 10, 1978 the Cher image is unfair the next time you see or hear someone operating a citizen s band cd radio or hear that familiar sound of breaker breaker or "10-4 Good buddy coming out. Of someone s car or pick up Don t let that old stereotype of the Cher enter your know the one the Farmer in the four wheel drive vehicle with nothing to doubt talk on his $200 radio and really say nothing. Or the so called red neck be Hind the controls of an 18-Wheeler who wants a Smokey report on interstate 5heading South near Bakersfield. These Are just a couple of the anyways people picture the Cher in the states. Well let me clue you in from a personal experience and from a Short association with these people Over Here. It s just not that cobers Here Are trying to Clear the air about All those rumours and stereotypes that have been tacked on to them an show us they have something to offer us. Contracting idea the Brookings Institute study that con tends 377,000 military personnel could be replaced with civilians is another computerized wonder which completely ignores the human personnel with proper training can handle anything a civilian can at no greater Cost. Learning to be a computer operator building crafts Mechanic Auto Mobile Mechanic accountant clerk Laun dry operator and others is no More difficult than learning to operate and maintain a tank or a missile site. It also trains you to earn a living in civilian life. Various Learned studies of this Type have again and again replaced army personnel by contractors with forecasts of unrealized savings. The army in Germany is a Good example of contracting activities to an extreme. I would expect that the next step would be to contract for combat teams. A Learned study of this Type could use Back up Dat from Napoleon s time of the Success of Mil itary mercenaries. Take a Good hard look at any study that recommends More contracting. The track record of such innovations is very is also self perpetuating and subject to the same abuses that accompany Man contracting activities. . I recently had a bad situation made Goodby one of those so called red necks of the Road and if it weren t for the unselfish acts of these people i could still be there. While travelling from Zweir Lycken on the autobahn i had some car trouble which put me temporarily out of commis Sion and in need of some help from some one. About 40 minutes and some 50 cars later a Blue car pulled up to me with one of those familiar Long antennas sticking out from gentleman had nothing that could help me in starting my car so he began calling out on his radio in search of some one who might be of assistance to me. It did t take Long at All for the Welcome sound of a Friendly voice atthe other end to answer and inquire As to what my problem was and my 10-20, or location. About 15 minutes later the Cowboy Ashe is called came Wheeling up behind me with his Orange warning lights atop his vehicle flashing like one would expect from the Hometown police. Vin a matter of minutes my car was run Ning again and i found myself on the Rda with an escort from these Guys to my exit. The Point of this letter is to give a vote of thanks to these two individuals and other people just like them for their unselfish and sometimes timeless efforts in helping people in distress no matter How Small it american cd operators and related clubs in Germany Are a much misunderstood group of people i feel. They Are not the rabble rousing old country boys some people make them out to the most part the cobers i know Are like anyone else anywhere who. Is out to Beof assistance to the Community. Not just on the roads and autobahn but through organized fund drives Community improving club activities and special Community assistance individuals have proven not Only to me but to others in Germany that they Are Community am not a cd owner or operator but i m one Smokey who appreciates the one that Are out there. Mike Allegr Ramstein a Germany letters to the editor cafes 2nd party Check policy i am an executive officer of a company Here in Germany. In this position i handle Many indebtedness problems. This letter is in reference to cafes policy on second party company has had a few cases where an individual who cashes a second part Check is placed on the suspended Check cashing list. Why does cafes hold the second party As the responsible individual for the dishonoured Check it seems that the party who writes the Check should have his Check cashing Privi Leges suspended. In one Case in particular one of our people endorsed a second part Check that bounced and had his Check cashing privileges suspended. This party does t even have a checking account and the person who wrote the Check is tillable to Cash checks at cafes. I called cafes Munich in reference to this policy. I was told that the one who reaps the benefits from the Check sign the Back that is is solely responsible for the explain the reasoning behind this policy. And if this is the Case i ask that this policy be displayed at All cafes out lets.2nd. It. Romayne e. Tyrrell Wiesbaden Germany editor s note Fred Schonwetter comptroller he cafes Europe replies cafes holds the second party responsible because he is the party who receive the Money or merchandise from us and who is legally responsible for reimburse reimbursement is made to cafes Check cashing privileges of the second party Are order to minimize embarrassment to an innocent party we have recently re Vised procedures on second party will now Contact the individual directly frustrating facility policies within the past week i have come face to face with just a couple of frustrations that May confront americans in Germany. On june 271 arrived in a Firnberg about 8p.m. With just enough Money to get Back to my unit. Since i m stationed in Hohenfels and Don t get too Many chances to come to the Nurnberg Exchange i decided to spend the night. To make a Long Story Short i did t havea reservation at the bavarian american hotel nor enough Money to get a room nearby therefore i asked the night Atten Dant if i could sit in the lobby or television room of the hotel. Do you want to know How it feels to be thrown out of a supposedly american run hotel in the Middle of Germany or How it feels to sleep or not sleep in a rail station also the next morning i went to the Nurnberg Exchange in Furth. Being from Hohenfels i did t know the Exchange did t open until 11 . On wednesday. However neither did a lot of other people. While i was standing in the hallway looked through the door of the cafeteria and noticed All the unused chairs. Looked Back at the pregnant women women with Small babies in their arms and women set Ting on the floor and an idea came to me. Why not ask if the cafeteria would let us sit Down until the Exchange opened i asked and it was As if i said the build ing was on fire. Of course i got the however i persisted and received the answer yes but this time , they let the women in but Only the women and of All things they locked the door. The women that followed still had to stand outside. There Are no chairs in the hallway and some had to wait for 30 min utes. Some of the people standing there came from Grafe Wohr and other areas and no just from Nurnberg. I m a member of brigade 75 unit and Only have 43 Days left in this country. These two incidents Are Only a few that confront americans in Germany. Maybe the policies could be changed at american run facilities like the bavarian american hotel where we might be a Leto get shelter in Case of dire need. I know this last part is asking for too much How Ever since i m leaving these changes May help the americans Here in Germany.1st it. Danny b. Robbins Hohenfels Germany editor s note capt. James jr., Public information officer Nurnberg military Community replies it. Col. G. Sidney Smith jr., director engineering and housing stated that the bavarian american hotel is established Asa pcs transient facility for military families. Numerous problems have been encountered within the past two years when the hotel has been used for a stopping off spot for unaccompanied servicemen. The actions of previous soldiers have resulted in the current policy. James j. Stapleton general manager Nurnberg area Exchange indicates that the request made to permit the use of the dining area of the cafeteria for certain customers waiting for the Exchange and adjoining facilities to open was certainly a valid one and should have been granted immediately without a hassle. Future Sim Ilar requests by customers will be preclude confusion for customers and to standardize operating hours the Exchange proposes in the near future to open the Furth shopping Center each operating Day at 10 . Following and request reimbursement. If payment is made within 30 Days the Case will be closed a without further action. Be if reimbursement is not received with in a 30-Day period the second party s0 Check cashing privileges will be revoked and collection action will be softball language i d like to make a comment about there language that s used at Ball games. My husband plays on a softball team and Ursil three children and i go to the games. Be Well the players and spectators use de unlovable language they seem to not let it Mother them that there Are children Ante wives present. I i have said politely to a couple of Guys please watch your language there Areth children seems to me i be noticed it s the younger soldiers. Up i realize a lot of them Are not married re and do not have children. But for All Thuv mothers and children who d like to in Joist the game without the cussing and Nam calling i do not mind correcting soldiers. I d like to sit on the bleachers just on game and not hear that four letter word that seems to be the Soldier s favorite.
