European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 30, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday september 30, 1978 the stars and stripes Page 19 big Banks of by Joe Weisel jazz writer the 16th edition of the Frankfurt jazz festival has done marched in leaving behind memo Ries of some Good jazz some not so Good jazz some frankly amateurish jazz and lots of free and adventurous attempts at something Akin to jazz. The Frankfurt festival has been leaning in recent years to the More Avant Garde activities on the jazz scene and the performers involved in this Type of music Many of them Frankfurt homeowners seemed to draw the most appreciation from the local sellout crowds. This writer tried to observe As much of what was going on As he could during the four evenings but since my schedule called for me to be Back at the Salt mines Early each following morning i gave up on guitarists John Mclaughlin and his one truth band on saturday and Al Dimeola and his group on sunday. I did stay Long enough however to realize that i did t want to peril my aging eardrums by the stacked Banks of speakers each group had assembled behind them and to become aware that there was very Little if any jazz intermingled with the Rock that both groups were spewing Forth. One of the highlights of the festival at least for me you know about a jazz happening in Europe Festi Val jazz club concert tour or other news of the Art share it with other readers by dropping a line to jazz co entertainment editor stars & stripes Apo 09175. Civilian address Postrach 1110 34, d-6100 Darmstadt. Was the Solo now production put together by German producer Joachim Ernst Berendt for Germany s Goethe Institute roughly the German equivalent of America s United states information Agency. Pianist Joachim Lihn a ibis and flautist Gunter Hampel trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff All germans and Swiss drummer Pierre Favre each performed Solo improvisations during the first half hour and then joined for a collective improvised Bash for the last part of the hour. Some surprisingly swinging music was heard from them individually including Favre who surrounds him self with All manner of Drums cymbals gongs Chimes woodblocks and other percussive instruments making his Rig look somewhat like a stall at a Flea Market. The boys have a collective empathy that allows them to blend Well in their unified work and still maintain their individual artistic identities. Other acts that struck my fancy were the trumpets plus of Kenny Wheeler Tomasz Stanko and Lester Bowie with Bowie being the Star and humorous Relief of this aggregation the United jazz & Rock ensemble a nine piece band playing Rock influenced but always clearly defining the jazz superstructure compositions by the various members of the group which includes Mangelsdorff Barbara Thompson Eberhard Weber Wolf gang Dauner Ian Carr ack Van Roypen Volker Kriegel Jon Hiseman and Tony Coe sitting in for the ailing Char lie Mariano and Tenor saxes today with Archie Shepp joining George Adams and Heinz Sauer in some wild and swinging hard driving exhibitions of the capabilities of the Tenor saxophone As played by some of today s Mas ters. Too exciting As a group Effort was the concert jazz band put together by Swiss pianist and Arranger George Gruntz. The similarity to Thad Jones writings was distracting and the use of the Harp played by Lois Colin for transitions from one chorus to the next was a bit of a cheap trick.
