And the government which is asking for advice on its Labelling requirements May be ready to change the voluminous rules in an Effort to give shoppers uniform and use Ful information. The nationwide search for advice has heard a Parade of Consumers and Public in Terest groups demand a full list of ingredients on the labels of All processed foods and the relative amount of each ingredient perhaps in percentages. Some witnesses have told the three fed eral agencies involved that labels often waste space by providing unnecessary and at times misleading nutritional data. Most of those testifying at hearings in Washington this week have suggested dropping from nutrient labels the percentage of recommended daily allow ances of certain vitamins and minerals and substituting the Content of sugar Salt and possibly cholesterol. Certain nutritional information should be required on All processed foods the wit Nesses agree rather than Only certain categories of foods As is now required. The agencies involved Are the food and drug administration which regulates most foods on the Market the agriculture department which regulates red meat and poultry and the Federal Trade com Mission which polices food advertising. Food processes less enthusiastic about major Labelling changes Are urging the agencies to proceed with caution warning that increased Labelling costs will be passed on to the customer. Several groups including the National Consumers league and a number of Community action projects said the nutritional labels that now appear on Many foods were designed to assist buyers in an undernourished society whereas american shop pers More often face the problem of being overfed.
