European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 6, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday March 6, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers a while Back someone from Omaha wrote and asked Why men in the banking business seem sexier than physicians lawyers professors engineers architects artists or Blue Collar workers. You said most Bank ers dress better and have a More polished manner. I be been married to a banker for 37 years. He May look sexy but More important he is deeply concerned about his responsibilities to his Bank and his customers. My husband worries about the millions of dollars he has loaned to people he trusts. If they Don t repay those Loans the Bank could go under. Most people think All Bankers Are wealthy. They Don t realize there is a big difference in salary Between the chairman of the Board and the loan officers who Are vice presidents. Because of the farm econ omy Many Banks have been forced to close their doors. A banker can lose his Job be cause of mismanagement. I am not talking about the banker s mismanagement. I m talking about the mismanagement of the people who borrow. I Hope you will print this letter and give the Public a More realistic picture of Amer ican Bankers. It s time somebody did. A wife in Nebraska dear wife in Nebraska Here s your letter and my thanks on behalf of All the Bankers and their spouses who will bless you for writing. Dear Ann Landers i am a 25-year-old female attractive College graduate and a successful business woman computer Programmer. Three months ago i met or. Wonder we enjoy each other s company like to dance and ski and often we go to Church together. But no sex. He does t believe in sex outside of marriage. He wants to marry me. And that s what i m writing about. When i was 14, i succumbed to peer pressure like Many Young girls and started having sexual relations. In the inter vening 11 years i have had numerous one night stands but no live in arrangements. During that time i accumulated some unwanted dividends gonorrhoea twice pregnancy once abortion and a year ago genital herpes. I am living proof of that adage your sins will find you or. Wonderful is pressing me to set a Date. I Don t know what to do. Should i Tell him about my past keep my Mouth shut and Hope he is never disillusioned or simply Stop seeing him without explanation please Ann help me. I am going bonkers in Colo. Dear Bonk since you no longer have gonorrhoea i see no reason to bring up that old unpleasant Ness. However you should Tell or. Won derful5 about the genital herpes because after marriage you must take periodic pre cautions to make certain he does t become affected. As for the abortion i strongly advise you to Tell him. If he should learn about it from someone else he would be deeply disappointed and wonder what else in your past you have failed to mention. Dear Ann Landers please Settle an argument who is the greatest record seller of All time i say it is Michael Jackson. My Friend says i wrong. . Dear . You Are wrong. Michael Jackson s album thriller sold 35 million copies but White Christmas by Irving Berlin has sold 125 million records. Readers wishing to write to news America Syndi Cate columnist Landers May address their letters in care of the stars and stripes Apo 09211, . Forces reason for army s new promotion requirement explained i am writing this letter in reference to an article which appeared in the army times. This article pertained to a new policy to be instated july 1,1986, by the department of the army which will not allow service members to be promoted to the rank of staff sergeant without attending the Pri Mary leadership development course. I do believe that this is enough time for those who Are interested in career progression to obtain this course. I understand that in some military communities where the major command receives priority Over All allocations this can delay one s chances to enhance their military knowledge. What i cannot understand is How some senior enlisted personnel can act As counsel ing authorities to their subordinates while not attending this same course. There Are seven Levels of the army Ca reer progression program which include Basic training Advance individual training Basic combat training primary leadership course Advance noes first sergeant school and the sergeant major Academy. Though there Are blocks of instructions Given on leadership in some Levels there is Only one leadership course. How can you counsel your subordinates on the benefits of attending this course when you Are a prime example that you can Advance without it i feel that in order to realistically counsel my subordinates on progression that i should be aware of not Only what i am asking them to indulge in but also should have experienced it for myself. I feel that if you have been in the service for 12 years and have not attended this course that it is not just a coincidence and that while you were trying to elude this course you have lost a lot More. I feel that if your logic and motives Are questionable in the area of leadership your integrity respect and ability to Lead by example Are a distorted image of what a non commissioned officer should be. This is Why we Are told As leaders to eliminate those who do not belong so that we will not have these types of noncommissioned officers for examples. Sgt. Kenneth e. Goodrum Augsburg Germany editor s note Sec. Evelyn Colley officer enlisted promotions Branch 1st per com he Usa eur replies effective july 1, 1986, All sergeants on a local recommended list for promotion to staff sergeant who have not attended a resident primary leadership development course Ploc will be removed from the list. Mil percen has directed that priority for attendance be Given to promotable sergeants. If the army is to be truly effective it Don t complain get out and vote i be just read the letter from the Retiree who feels the government has reneged on its agreement. Well i feel this Way too and you know what it s our own fault. Yes it s your fault now Why do i say that because you Don t take the time to find out who your unit voting officer is. As Long As you and your family members can t take the time to cast a ballot our benefits Are going to be among the first budget cuts. We say we re tired of waiting for our raises to come at the last possible minute then they re barely a pittance. But what Are we doing about it nothing our leaders get a free ride on air Force jets and extra income to maintain two Homes. Any. One of you receive extra Money because you decided to buy a House stateside that s maintaining two Homes in t it what about our hospitals that s where they go for treatment yet they want to close them or Send our retirees elsewhere congressmen who work for six years Are eligible for retirement yet whose retirement benefits Are they after ours i Challenge any member of Congress to live on our salary without our benefits for one year that s with e-5 or o-3 pay at six years time in service. Now that you be read this letter i Hope you re mad As hell please Don t try to suppress your feelings get out and find your voting officer Register and vote. Don t forget the rest of your eligible family members their vote counts too i know you Don t want jury duty. Well the chances Are slim that you la Ever pull it. So get out and vote Theresa a. Pletcher Neu Bruecke Germany corporations defended by writer there have been several letters printed lately from writers who advocate taxing corporations As a cure for the National debt. Those who want to tax corporations do not understand the nature of a corporation. The fact is that no corporation has Ever paid or will Ever pay a Penny of tax. That s right. Zero. Zip. You see a corporation is a machine a Money making machine. Machines Don t pay taxes. It makes As much sense to say let s tax of course we won t tax cars All at the same rate. Cadillac will pay More than Chevy. The Rich Rolls Royce will pay the most. The elderly More than 100,000 Miles will have a double exemption. The retired in the junkyards will get a pen Sion. All they have to do is apply at the nearest automobile Security administration office. It should be obvious who will really pay the taxes levied against cars the owners. And so it is with corporations. Reasonable taxes Are paid by the owners the Stockhold ers. Confiscatory taxes Are passed on in increased prices for goods Ana services resulting in general inflation. Anyone who has been misled by anti capitalist propaganda into a Blind hatred of corporations should take an objective look at what a corporation is and does. The corporation is the greatest most productive in Novation in human history since the invention of writing. Imagine the Effort of planting working and harvesting an acre of wheat. Raise a cow Slaughter it dress it store it Cook it. Raise potatoes lettuce tomatoes cucumbers Harvest and process them All you can do All that work and take All that risk in order to feed yourself. Or you can walk into a Mcdonald s and buy a hamburger and Fries for about a Buck and a half. Take your Choice you Don t like general motors Corpora Tion build your own car. Anyone in Public office who advocates taxing corporations should immediately be forced out of office on grounds of terminal economic ignorance. But then most of con Gress would be out of work an altogether Sublime Prospect. Staff sgt. John p. Roshto Grafe Woehr Germany pen pals please publish our names in the penal column. Mary s. Macada a 26 Alma s. Macada a 25 t. Ruiz Street Glan South cot Abato Philippines must produce and retain the highest Caliper Soldier for a career in the army. This Means that requirements and standards cannot and must not remain constant changes must occur. These changes must be designed to meet the demanding goals and objectives that have been set to train and shape our future leaders. This Ploc requirement for promotion to staff sergeant did not exist in earlier years. Professional growth and a desire to improve chances for advancement motivated some soldiers to request attendance some were involuntarily selected to attend and others managed to escape attendance altogether. Consequently a few of today s leaders superiors were promoted without attending the course. It is not always necessary for a Superior to have experienced a specific deed or act in order to counsel a subordinate regarding its importance and advantages. In some instances the Leader who missed out on some Basic level training is equally prepared As someone who has attended the training to perform counselling. The one who missed out knows first hand the disadvantages of not attending because he she probably realizes now that the course curriculum exposes a potential Leader to valuable soldiering skills. Certainly a Soldier whose logic and motives Are questionable is not the one the army wants to retain As a future Leader. However it is the responsibility of com Manders and rating Chain officials to deter mine if a Soldier should be afforded the Opportunity to remain on Active duty.
