European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 17, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday March 17, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers dear Ann Landers i am a 19-year-old Mother of an infant son. The father of my child Tim was my High school sweetheart. We met at age 15 and lost our virginity to each other. Like so Many stupid teen agers we used no birth control believing it could t happen to us. At age 17, i became pregnant. I was stunned and heartsick when Tim said he did t believe he was the father and wanted nothing More to do with me. My parents went to see Tim s parents. There was a terrible Row. They said i was trying to trap their son and announced they were standing behind him. My folks stood up to All their abuse and said they were standing behind me. We decided not to file a paternity suit. The is Are Rich and powerful in this City and we figured Middle class working people like us would t stand a Chance. A few weeks ago a Friend at work told me i was a fool to tolerate such treatment since there is now a blood test that is 99 percent accurate. It is accepted in almost every state. Can you Tell me More about it very Anonymous in Dixie dear Dixie the test is called the human leukocyte Antigen blood test. It was originally devel oped to match Organ donors with those who needed transplants. It is 99.95 percent accurate in determining paternity. I urge you to press charges even if your state does not recognize this test. A competent High pow ered lawyer can lean on the state legis lature and generate enough support to get i through. Is. Magazine reported on a similar Case recently and the woman won it. Good Luck to you. Dear Ann Landers i could t believe it when i read your approval of a two hour Hospital visit by relatives and close friends and one hour for acquaintances. Hospitals Are not aunt Emma s parlor. The patient is there to recover not to dish the dirt. The Strain of making Small talk can be terminal in the doses you endorse especially when compounded by a number of visitors. Unless the patient is a spouse or a Par ent who needs a helping hand or emotional support from someone very close 10 min utes is just about right. Anything longer might Send him or her Back to intensive care. Been there in chicag Odear Chic my brains must have been awol when i of d that loony advice. My Stock answer for visiting the sick is stay away unless specifically invited. People go to hospitals because they Are sick not because they Are lonesome. I la take 12 lashes with a knotted bed Sheet. Dear Ann Landers please help women like me who Are too available too giving and too accommodating. I just wrecked a relationship that had a lot of potential because i made the same damned fool mistake. I suffocated the Guy to death with too much attention and too much caring. As always i lost control of the relationship along with my self respect. Help me Ann. I Don t want to make the same mistake time after time. Please Tell me How to cure this disease before i get i again. Vulnerable in Utah dear vulnerable i think you Are being too hard on yourself. Part of the problem As i see it is your Selec Tion of men. Get counselling and find out Why you pick men who Are unable to appreciate a Loving caring attentive woman. You might also work at building self esteem and learn How to wait for a Man to lavish affection on you for a change. Clarification of Dodds attendance policies reprinted last year we printed a clarification from or. Beth Stephens director department of defense dependents schools about student attendance requirements in Dodds Germany. We have been asked by the director of Dodds Germany . The department of defense dependents schools Dodds educational Gram is organized on the Basic Assumption that All students will attend school class regularly and punctually. Adherence to the school attendance policy is the responsibility of the parents an students. Parents must be consistently and periodically informed of student absence in order for them to exercise parental control and responsibility. The purpose of this action is to establish patterns of Good attendance and to assure that educational programs have an Opportunity to be successful. No unauthorized absence can retaken lightly. Principals Are responsible for oversee ing school class attendance procedure Sand ensuring that attendance policies Are specific fair and Well publicized. Accurate attendance records Are maintained for each student. School attendance and attendance in each class Are checked daily. Attendance records Are reviewed and follow up action on excessive and or unexcused absences is taken to include the notification of parents and disciplinary action when appropriate. Excused absences Are documented i writing. Teachers Are expected to Monitor Stu Dent attendance and enforce school poli cies. Each teacher must maintain accurate records and report daily classroom attendance. Teacher records of student attendance Are the official attendance re cords for students in class. Normally students who do not attend school a full Day will not be allowed to participate in or attend any school sponsored event scheduled on that same Day. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the principal. Pupils with unexcused absences will not be granted makeup privileges and the Grade for each Day missed or portions thereof will be an it is recognized that absence from school is necessary under certain conditions. Every Effort must be made by Stu dents parents teachers and administrators to keep absences and tardiness to minimum. Excused absences Are granted for ill Ness family emergencies e.g., severe ill Ness or death in the family local hardship situation religious observances family trips and medical appointments which cannot be arranged during non school time. Excused absences Are granted to those students participating in school sponsored activities including athletics tournaments and other interscholastic events occurring away from the Home school. The sponsor must provide the principal with a written explanation of each Stu Dent absence. There will be no academic penalty for excused absences. Students Are to stay current with assigned class work and Are responsible for the work missed during their absence from class. Work missed must be made up in a reasonable amount of time usually equal to the amount of time of absence. When students Are sent Home because they Are ill they Are to be accompanied by their sponsor or an individual designated and authorized by their sponsor. Installations Are expected to make every Effort to schedule religious activities and medical or dental appointments for students at times other than during school hours. Students who can attend required religious services or arrange their medical appointments during non school hours Are expected to do so. Students who cannot meet their religious obligations or cannot have their medical or dental appointments during non school hours May be excused during the school Day for the time necessary to meet these obligations. A student who after reporting to school skips or leaves a class without an excused permission is truant. Any student who is absent from school without the knowledge and permission of his her sponsor or school authorities is truant. Unexcused absences which Are excessive and or which interfere with the Stu Dent s educational program May result in administrative action. A concerted Effort will be made to prevent and remedy truancy in the Early stages. School personnel whenever possible will seek cooperation from sponsors and assist them in correcting and preventing truancy. Afternoon detention temporary removal from class suspension and recommendation for probation Are disciplinary devices the principal can use in Addi Tion to those techniques and procedures he comments on documentary i viewed the Bill Meyers lbs documentary the vanishing family crisis in Black America with horror. The statistics cited included the follow ing nearly 60 percent of All Black children Are born out of Wedlock almost 50 percent of All Black teen age girls become pregnant and about half of All Black children Are partially supported by welfare payments. The main focus of the documentary was upon 26-year-old Timothy the unmarried and unconcerned father of at least eight children. Even More disheartening to me were the political commentaries eloquently polarized by George will and Carl Rowan. Will s argument is that Timothy has been conditioned to his Lack of guilt via behaviour modification using civil rights rhetoric As a tool. Will is obviously fed up with the alibis Given for the sexual and social irresponsibility demonstrated by the Timothy of Amer Ica s ghettos. Conversely Rowan believes. That will s arguments Are ill informed and slanderous. Timothy is viewed As a victim of deprivation and discrimination in education employment and housing which has left him entrapped in a setting of ignorance Vio Lence drugs and general hopelessness. Although one must not fall into the trap of analysing stereotypical families obviously there Are very solid Black family structures in american either of the positions summarized above address potential solutions. Given the cause and effect relationship which harbours and allows the Timothy to reach irresponsible manhood in t it time to Stop assessing blame whether one accepts the Timothy the menace or the racial entrapment theory the effect is still a growing family crisis for the Black ghetto family. Now is the time for informed focus upon the effect else the baby is thrown out with the Bath it. Col. Melvin n. Johnson Vaihinger Germany used by Counselor teachers and others to reduce the frequency of unexcused absences. Frequent truancy places the student in a status that would require More serious disciplinary measures including suspension or even recommending expulsion. No non school sponsored activity May take place in the school building during the school Day. Students May not be Dis missed to attend non school sponsored activities during the school Day except under teacher supervision or upon written parental request with administrative approval. Often school principals receive re quests from non school groups or associations for approval for groups of students to be dismissed Early from school and in some instances for periods involving one or More Days. While the merits of some activities of outside organizations Are Well recognized approval of these requests cannot be granted because of the need to maintain class schedules. Organizations should be encouraged to schedule their activities after school hours during holidays or vacation Peri ods in order to permit each student to fully accomplish his or her academic objectives. These attendance policies Are implemented throughout Dodds.
