   European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 17, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Page 26 the stars and stripes monday March 17, 1986 Arkansas gets 3rd straight track title Oklahoma City a led by Brilliant soph Omore Roddie Haley the first runner to break one minute in the 500-meter race and distance runner Paul Donovan the University of Arkansas men captured a record tying third consecutive title in the Mcaa indoor track and Field championships saturday. The sensational 21-year-old Haley from Texarkana Texas broke the world indoor Best in the 500 for the second straight night clocking 59.82 seconds the first under one minute time in history. Friday night Haley the 1985 Mcaa outdoor 400 meter Champion had run 1 00.69 in the heats. Saturday night he led All the Way against a crack Field including Villanova s Edwin my Difedi who also ran under the old world indoor Best clocking 1 00.24. If he Haley has one great Quality it s his competitive spirit Arkansas coach John Mcdonnell said. He keeps on breaking those records. He s just a terrific athlete and a terrific  Haley certainly does t Lack for Confidence. After his race Friday he said i think i can win it the final. I always think i can  he said i Don t take the 500 seriously but i m begin Ning to like it. I think i can run a minute even. I la try Todo it tomorrow saturday it was the third time Haley has run the 500 this year and the third time he had smashed the world indoor Best. I still had some More left he said. I was thinking run like a madman " buoyed by Haley s remarkable performance and Victo Ries by Donovan in the 3,000-meter race and the 3,200 meter team relay with a startling comeback by Dono Van on the final leg the Razorbacks amassed 49 Points in the two Day meet at the myriad. Arkansas is the second school to win three straight Mcaa indoor titles joining Texas Elpaso which did it twice from 1974-76 and 1980-82. Villanova was second with 22 Points and Georgetown and Boston University tied for third with 20 apiece. Alabama was a Surprise Winner of the women s championship capturing its first indoor Crown with a total of 41 Points. Favored Texas finished second with 31, and Southern California and Tennessee tied for third with 26 each. Donovan a senior who won the Mcaa indoor 1,500 meter title last year took the 3,000 this year in 7 54.60, after coming from third place around the final turn to give the Razorbacks the Victory in the 3,200-meter relay in 7 20.72. In that closing drive in the relay Donovan passed Georgetown s Miles Irish and notre Dame s Jim Tyler with a surprising kick for a Long distance runner. Hawks 106, kicks 101 new York Dominique Wilkins scored 29 Points and Randy Wittman hit the go ahead jumper with 47 seconds left As Atlanta Defeated new York handing the kicks their seventh consecutive loss. The Victory was Atlanta s 12th in its last 14 games while new York has lost 11 of 12. Trailing 92-91 Midway through the fourth Quarter the Hawks held the kicks to three Points in the next 3 a minutes As Wilkins and Wayne tree Rollins combined for nine Points giving Atlanta a 100 95 advantage with 3 09 left. But kicks Center James Bailey who led the kicks with 22 Points hit six consecutive Points giving new York 101-100 Lead with 1 02 remaining. Wittman then hit a 15-foot jumper giving the Hawks the Lead for Good. Wilkins and Cliff Levingston added two free throws apiece Over the last 13 seconds to Clinch the Victory. Pacers 105, bullets 100 Indianapolis Indiana led by As Many As 24 Points in the second Quarter but the pacers needed three free throws from Vern Fleming and two by Clint Richardson in the final 23 seconds to hold off Washington. Herb Williams scored 18 of his team High 27 Points to help the pacers take a 49 25 Lead Midway through the second Quarter. The bullets shot Only 39 percent from the Field in the first half. Jeff m alone who finished with a game High 30 Points then began to penetrate the Indiana defense and the bullets rallied to Trail by hat half time. Favorite crashes on final jump austrian pus off world cup upset Whistler British Columbia up Austria s Anton Steiner was the Surprise Winner at the final world cup downhill race of the year on an icy course at Canada s Whistler Mountain. Switzerland s Peter Mueller the favorite heading into the race lost his Chance to tie Austria s Peter Wirnsberger for the world cup downhill title when he crashed off the final jump on the 3,832-meter course just 200 meters from the finish. Steiner won his second downhill of his career in a time of 2 09.78. Stiener a 11-year Veteran of the tour captured his first career downhill in february at Moraine France. In earlier years Stiener had been better known As a slalom and giant slalom specialist. I have trained so much this season like never before and Only downhill said Steiner 27. I Only wanted to win one downhill this year. Now i have won two and it is the Best i could do. There was no pressure on me no problem. Mueller would have won if he had made it to the finish. He was not As Lucky As me  Mueller was philosophical about the crash which left him second in the downhill standings for the second straight year. The course was fast and icy. It was fantastic Mueller said. I had the Best inter mediate time by a full second. I could have stood up and pushed the jump but i took a risk and the course was too fast. The skis came up and i landed on the tails he said. Mueller who turns 29 this year predicted that he would return next year to win his third downhill title. I made a few mistakes this year and i try never to make the same mistake twice Mueller said. I will always know that i could win this  Italy s Michael Mair who won this year at Val d Sere France took the Silver with 2 09.89 and Austria s Leonard Stock was third in 2 10.84. Wirnsberger who after winning four Gold medals Early in the season was guaranteed half the downhill title even if he did t finish the race placed a disappoint ing Lith with 2 11.63. Wirnsberger s four golds and one Silver gave him 120 Points in the standings five ahead of Mueller the title Winner in 1979 and 1980. Mueller had three Gold medals and two silvers. Switzerland s Pirmin Zurbriggen second in the Overall standings behind Luxem Burg s Marc Girardelli was fourth in 2 10.82. Teammate Franz Heinzer was fifth in 2 10.95. France s Franck Pons was sixth in 2 11.09. Olympic Gold medal Winner Bill Johnson of Van Guys calif., had his Best race of the year placing seventh in 2 11.31. A photo austrian Katrin Gutensohn. Girardelli was eighth fastest on the Day with 2 11.38. France s Franck Piccard was ninth in 2 11.58. Austria s Stefan Nieder see was 10th in 2 11.60. Fletcher wins Vail Colo. Ebullient american Pam Fletcher who was nearly dropped from the . Ski team earlier this season captured her first world cup Victory saturday win Ning the final women s downhill of the sea son on Vail Mountain. Switzerland s Maria Walliser who finished third captured the season title. Fletcher 23, was consistently fast in training and carried it Over to the race with a 1 54.28 winning time. Canada s Laurie Graham rebounding from a disappointing fall last week settled for second place in 1 54.60
