Baum older s Rick Jaster chalked up his second Dodds record and accent s Liz Wilson put her name on one to feature the action in the first Day of the 1986 Cen trial european track and Field championships. Jaster who set the 3,000-meter record of 8 43.4 last week on the dirt at Vilsick and who might do it again today on artificial turf splintered the 1,500-meter Mark in Friday s first championship event. He did the metric mile in 3 55.1, erasing the record of 3 37.7 set by Simonella s Tim Bolton in the Italy regional a in 1978. Wilson ran the 3,000 meters in 10 14.1, removing from the log the 10 17.3 clocking turned in by Wuerzburg s Sabrina Dorn hocfcrinl980. Wilson is a definite threat for the 1,500 record of 4 40.4, which american school of London s Cara Windham established two years ago in today s finals and she could get Windham s 800-meter record of 2 17.6, also set in 1984, today. She breezed to a 2 25.3 win in Friday s qualifying heat but she was easing up at the end because she still had the sprint Medley qualifying and the 3,000 meters ahead of her. Steve Finch Hanau s Fine runner helped me a lot today Jaster said follow Berger s Bow takes pole for belgian up. Spa Franco champs Bel Gium a Austria s Gerhard Berger in a Benetton Bow took the provisional pole position Friday for the belgian grand prix where new safety measures dominated the off track discussions. But when the Green Light started Friday s one hour qualifying session for sunday s belgian race speeds quickly climbed higher than the qualifying record set by world Champion Alain Frost Here last year. Berger set the first pole time but was bumped Down to fourth by Frost and the Williams hondas of Brazil s Nelson Piquet and Britain s Nigel Mansell. Berger then lapped the track in i minute 56 seconds despite going sideways with All four wheels on the ing his record setting performance. He took a Good Lead in the beginning and i was pressed to catch him. Today was a great Day for running and the Competition was quite Jaster started Back in the pack but was moving up on Finch by the end of a Lap and caught him at the far turn of the third Lap and pulled steadily ahead. Finch finished in 4 00 4. I gave him a Battle As Long As i could but Rick is such a Good runner that i could t keep it up All the Way Finch said. He helped me get my Best time of the year and i m sure 1 put enough pressure on him for a while to help him get the Jaster s record was anticipated because of the presence of Finch but most of the coaches on hand for the meet gave Wilson Little Chance for the record. She just does t have any Competition Here and it s a shame because she s such a Fine runner said Augsburg s Roy claw son. If she were pushed she could get the record. Shell probably get the 1,500 and maybe the 800, but the 3,000 does t appear did Liz Ever prove the coaches wrong she ran away from the Field Baum Holder s Tracy Jaster was half a Lap behind in second and when she came gown the Home stretch with the seconds ticking away visibly on the electric timer everybody in the stands All the coaches and other competitors were Yelling her on to the Mark. And she got a Fine round of applause for her accomplishment. This is great this is great f fed so great she said after her Victory. I was t sure i could get the record but i went after it All the what a race she ran. I m glad i was wrong Clawson said later. It was really something to stand Here and watch such a Fine demonstration a great three other finals were staged in both the boys and girls Competition but nothing even resembled record setting performances. Frankfurt s Ted Mcnamara took the shot put with a 50-7 /4 heave Stuttgart s la Vaughn Allen went 43-2v4 to win the triple jump and Hahn s Cedric Harris took pole vault honors from Munich s Jason Pili Mai on the basis of fewer misses at 12-3. Harris did t get to make his third jump at 12-6. He broke his pole make that George Pilimai s pole on his second at tempt. Harris broke his own pole earlier in the week and Pilimai who competed for accent and finished fourth at 11-6, was gracious enough to let Harris compete with his equipment. Munich s Donna Briggs took the girls discus championship with a 120-11 spin Mannheim s Marie Butler prevailed in the High jump at 5-2 and Gic Ssan s Michelle Harris took the Long jump with a 17-214 Effort.
