European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 20, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Arm Landers dear Ann Landers i strongly identified with theman who blew his stack and lost control. The consequences were tragic in his Case. I was a lot Luck Ier. While on my Way to North Africa on a troop ship in june 1943, a member of my unit returned this berth one night dead drunk and threw up All Over me. I was so enraged i went Ber i Page 11 letters realized soon after that he was completely out of it an not responsible for what he did. To have killed him would have been a terrible tragedy for both of us. Late we became Good friends. I Learned a lot from that experience Ann. It taught me compassion for drunks and the value of controlling my temper. Medford, Medford Luck was with you. There in t a person alive who has not committed an act in anger that he or she would give anything to undo. Dear Ann Landers there is a painful Side to divorce that no one mentions. It is the parents of the children who Are getting the divorce. In my wildest dreams i never imagined that we would experience such pain As we have suffered since our Middle aged daughter informed us that she was leaving her family to marry another Man. It is like a Nightmare that does t end. We love our son in Law and it tears us up to see what this divorce is doing to him. We dare not take sides for fear of alienating our daughter. She is a dear person anyhow All this came about is a mystery to us. It s As if she suddenly took leave of her senses. The children Are bewildered and we must Comfort them which is difficult be cause we need someone to Comfort us. I Don t know Why i am writing to you Ann maybe it s because i need to talk to someone who will be non judgmental. Thanks for being there. Heartsick in Wisconsin dear Wisconsin plenty of readers will identify with you dear. Mean while the future May be better for All concerned. No one knows for sure what a marriage is like except the two people in it. Dear Ann Landers in a recent column a Reader gave the word you album rap and you let him get away with it. He said the word you can put people on the defensive and de stroy relationships. The example he gave Why did t you Why Don t you Why should you Why could you the implied message is you messed up. It s your fault. You Are i believe you can be a terrific word if used in positive Way. It can improve relationships not destroy them. For example you did a terrific Job or you look better every time i see you or you made my or the Best thank you for being so in closing i la say Ann you Are the greatest. Positive in la dear positive thank you. Dear Ann Landers i Hope you will see fit to include this in your column. It really hit me where i live. Speaker no. 1 sometimes i would like to ask go Why he allows poverty famine and injustice when he could do something about speaker no. 2 Well Why Don t you ask him speaker no. 1 because i m afraid god might ask me the same writers discuss the summer hire program i am writing in response to a recent letter about baggers As summer hires. The baggers Are not summer hire employees he have licenses from cafes to work for tips Only at the Shorette and main Exchange but they Are separate from regular cafes summer hires. Regular cafes summer hires work stocking shelves pricing merchandise loading and unloading truck shipments helping customers and other errands. I am an cafes summer hire and have worked summer hire for the past two years. I have Learned much from working summer hire How to run businesses How to be effective in the military How to do a Good secretarial Job and How to find out what careers m interested in plus much much More. My supervisors give me and other summer hires jobs that May Benefit us in our future employment years. Name withheld Augsburg West Germany i would like to comment on the letter in which a Reader provides the recent article " Fly by wire wizard though obviously written for a Lay audience needs some clarification to rid it of the never world Aura. Peter Sutcliffe chief Engineer for advanced technology in Boeing s commercial aircraft division has to have been grievously misquoted no manufacture simply lays wiring of whatever nature along any path. Routing and securing of wire bundles and connectors is mandated by engineering orders which Are rigidly enforced. The comment that computers can preclude a turns Sharp that it would crack an aircraft s body i am going to let alone As do not know what is being said. Assume it is illustrative of stresses and loads. However the comment that the airlines have lesser pressures than the military to Cut weight is dead wrong. I personally have sat through Many Day and writer expressed Many negative opinions concerning the summer hire program. First i would like to defend the Coffee Bagger the Job does in fact introduce Young people to the world of business teach them responsibility an give them experience on How to work with people. The Bagger like any other worker must be at work on time learn to correctly carry out his duties and learn to Deal courteously with people who May or not be courteous to him. While it is True that companies such As Ford or Ibado not just create jobs for people who wish to work for them they do create jobs in order to improve serv ice. I think cafes May have hired the Coffee Bagger in order to shorten the amount of time which custom ers must spend in line. They were Able to decrease the amount of things the cashier had to do without spend ing More tax dollars and thereby seeded things up. By the Way the baggers work for tips Only but probably do not expect tips from every single person. Staff sgt. Michael s. Proctor Augsburg West Germany on article night sessions with both the engineering staffs of the airline and the manufacturer trying to Cut weight. The major manufacturers have without exception spent thousands of dollars for each and every Pound deleted. I have been retired from this Effort for the last fou years so the following example numbers Are outdated and by Extension today s number will be a 12-year amortization period and 4,200 hours per year utilization the Cost of carrying each excess Pound was in excess of $50,000. For the record i am a retired . Air Force retirement from the air Force i spent an extended period with a major Airframe manufacturer on the commercial Side of the House in engineering and air line consulting. A. Forsblade Torrejon a Spain Union spokesman sets record straight the response printed by the stars and stripes to a recent letter employee representation rights Dis cussed contained an incorrect statement. I d like to set the record straight. The Usa eur civilian personnel division spokesman stated that for employees in recognized bargaining units the Union is obligated to provide representation at the employee s request whether a dues paying member or up until recently this statement was legally Correct. But recent Federal court decisions drastically changed the Law. Now unions representing Federal government employees Are obligated to provide Legal representation to employees Only in very limited cases. Basically a Union must pursue Only contract grievances for both members. But if an employee wants for example to file a discrimination complaint Leoa unfair labor practice Ulp charge or an Appeal with the Merit systems Protection Board a Subtle Union does not have to provide assistance. In fact the largest Union representing Federal employees in Europe has adopted exactly this position. Since it is unfair to dues paying members to devote the Union s limited resources to free riders the overseas education association gives Legal representation inmost cases Only to those who have paid their fair thanks you for the Opportunity to set the record straight.
