European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 18, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Arm Landers dear Ann Landers my husband and i have raised a Large family each child very different from the others. They Range from extremely ambitious to somewhat unmotivated. Our children received different Levels of education. Some have been More successful career Wise than others but on the whole they have chosen pleasant spouses brought up respectful caring youngsters and have Man aged to get along quite Well financially with occasional help from us. I truly believe especially in this Day and age that we have been blessed. We have never had any earthshaking problems with any of our children or grandchildren or with each other. My husband i la Call him Dan feels we have failed As parents because Mary does t keep an immaculate House or Johns car is never clean or Joan spends Money on frivolous things or Bill a kids have atrocious manners and talk with gum in their Mouths. I keep reminding him that it s quite extraordinary to have had 40 years of marriage and no major calamities in a family of our size. A few Hurt feelings Here and there but no big blow . As the years Fly by i see Dan becoming More obsessed with unmet he nurses his angry feelings and becomes increasingly bitter. He does t realize that he is not perfect and that he has not always fulfilled my Dan quit going to Church because the minister was t spiritual enough. He openly encourages the children especially the adult males not to attend Church. I love to walk jog and dance. Dan will not join me in these activities because he gets enough exercise at so i jog walk and go to Church alone. My future looks Bleak. It is possible that i will be a widow with financial burdens because Dan has a Good Chance of dying from lung cancer before he is 60. The Man lights one cigarette off the other and refuses to quit. If the cigarettes Don t get him i see myself growing old with an increasingly angry and bitter Man complaining More and More because everyone has failed him. Ann please do a column on expectations real and unrealistic. I keep telling Dan that you can t change people but he says i m wrong. I believe this is the reason so Many adults mostly males say no matter How hard i tried i could never please my the result is disappointed parents and unhappy children. I Hope my letter will touch a tender spot in some of your readers. Please encourage children and spouses to clip and mail this column to the offending member of the family. Ever prayerful Ever hopeful in Middle America dear Middle America i suspect your husband s dissatisfaction with his Chil Dren is rooted in the fact that he never received unconditional love and approval from his own father. The unrealistic demands he makes on his sons and daughters Are the result of his unfulfilled dreams. He wanted his children to be perfect because he never course they failed him and he feels unless Dan gets some therapy highly unlikely your prognostications May Well be Correct i Hope you Are As Strong As you seem to be and that you will continue to maintain a positive attitude and continue to count your blessings no matter what. Availability of healthy food discussed i recently read a letter in the stars and stripes that voiced concerns that i had been planning to write about for a very Long time the availability of healthy foods to . Service members. My letter however does not refer to the commissary but to the cafeterias and food malls available. It seems the Only food available to us these Days Are pizzas hamburgers or Greasy Chicken much in imitation of the fast food chains in the United states. In the United states though there Are alternatives close at hand. I understand and appreciate the Good intent of offer ing Home style foods to soldiers Here but what would be wrong with a few healthy alternatives for those of us who Are not junk food fans what about incorporating some of the local Delica cies which Are often too far off to get to from the main american shopping areas or How about some Ameri can style Home cooking i recall a cafeteria in Frank Furt by the Exchange which has now been replaced by Burger King. It at least offered soups and sandwiches. I was saddened when the food mall opened in our Mannheim Community and offered nothing but junk foods. With the recent military emphasis on healthier lifestyles you d think this would Stop. Even the one cafeteria i do know of serves food lukewarm and bathed in grease but that is a local Issue. One can at least get vegetables there and cafeterias Are not restau rants. Cafeterias near exchanges seem to be a thing of the past. There Are Many easy to fix healthy dishes available. I am tired of having to put unhealthy things into my body when i am forced to eat on Post. Let s really make the military fit to win and offer some healthier alternatives. I know it can t be hard and would just take a few people in the right positions to make it happen. This development cannot be the result of Public demand i have heard too Many complaints. Was an opinion poll taken years ago when the Frankfurt Caf Eteria was replaced by Burger King if so i will speak no More. 1st it. Jacqueline l. Zimmermann Sandhofer West Germany editor s note it. Col. Charlie White Public affairs officer he cafes Europe replies cafes Europe provides a variety of food programs and products to our customers. The key word is the definition of nutritional is the assimilation of food to promote growth. To accomplish this the body must have certain nutrients to exist and develop. These include Low calorie soft drinks fruit juices fresh fruit salads Low fat milk and meats with Low fat Content such As Turkey Chicken tuna and 85 percent lean hamburger. Additionally if you want to make your own lunch you can buy a number of health alternatives. Cafes makes eight types of High fiber breads made from whole grains. We also plan to have oat bran muffins available by february. Among the whole grains Oats ranks As the highest source of protein in choosing what kind of food outlets to have in a Community cafes and the Community command base decisions on the demands of the customer base. Market ing surveys use age and annual income As the primary factors in determining customer preferences. In addition cafes considers military family age group and size in deciding what outlets Best meet the Community s needs. For Frankfurt 80 percent of the Market is categorized As fast food customers. Most Burger King Sites if not All Are requested by the military commanders. Burger King corp., cafes and the Community then determine final site location. Lettuce know if we can help with other questions and Well try to meat your needs. Rules covering employment explained i am a Canadian citizen with a . Resident alien card married to a .
