The american attendance figures and formula one grand prix racing figures Are compiled from reports filed by the official sanctioning bodies of the various races and by Goodyear s racing division Field managers. The figures Are based on the weekend totals not just race Day itself and that s fair enough because qualifying sessions in both formula one grand prix racing and other types of racing Are big draws especially opening Day qualifying at the indy 500. As in previous years the formula one grand Pri events continued to draw the highest per race Atten dance in the world. Last year s 16 world driving championship series attracted an average of 158,947 spectators per race weekend up nearly 8 percent from the 147,569 reported in 1987. Part of that record setting increase Goodyear says was caused by additional seats at Daytona Richmond Bristol and Dover As Well As a new race at Phoenix. Cart s indy car series which includes the Sac sanctioned Indianapolis 500, Drew More than2 million spectators for the second straight year 2,124,000up 3.5 percent from 1987 s attendance of 2,053,000. The average jumped from 136,867 to 141,600. Leaving out the indy 500, which annually draws More than 400,000 fans the 14 cart sanctioned races averaged 123,143. Goodyear says that attendance was also up Nihra drag racing the Simsa sports car racing series spent car racing trans am racing and that it in creased generally in the rest of America s Many professional racing series. Now if you add other International events the world sports car championship that includes the 24 hours of be Man formula 3 and formula Ford racing historic car racing the Man european touring car races and world championship rallies go carts and National races in Europe an South America and in countries like Japan Australia and new zealand the total world attendance Fig ure would probably rival that of International soccer. And we Haven t even looked at grand prix motor Cycle racing where the attendance has shot up so High that it has even attracted the attention of for Mula one Czar Bernie Ecclestone the Man behind formula one s commercial and television Aims to put grand prix motorcycling on a regular television basis just As he has done wit formula one grand prix racing. We published a report recently in our other column car Corner noting that even the soviet Union is planning to make a bid to stage a formula one grand prix race. Hungary has already done so and its crowds have been huge boosting Good year s formula one attendance figures by a big margin for three years running. The stars and stripes bengals Brooks scores by the Book by Larry Stone Santa Rosa Calif press Democrat Miami Here s All you need to know about Cincinnati running Back James Brooks As the bengals prepare to meet san Francisco in sunday s super bowl he s the Little one who does t dance. All i want to do after i score a touch Down is rest he said. I go to the Bench and take a he s also the one without the Nick name. Check does have a nickname. Job. Stop the presses. James Brooks otherwise known As the bengals other running Back is everything that Elbert Ickey Woods in t a flashy unassuming Undis i covered by the a Brooks Tion and unwilling to change anything about his personality or style to make it otherwise. Put another Way he s refusing to Beicke fied. More accurately he s constitutionally unable to. Sorry but there will be no Ponytail no jewelry and no outrageous antics from this Guy the Pride of Warner Robins a. In a Backfield of free spirits of Boom ers and mickeys Job will remain the voice of sanity. It s a matter of style and my style isto play the game quietly without much fanfare he said. Ickey has his thing and it s great. I have my thing too. I m not trying to steal headlines. I be mad enough of a name for myself to satisfy and therein lies to rub. His Nam might not be As melodious As those of his Backfield counterparts but he s very nearly As devastating to opposing teams. While Woods was gaining 1,066 Yard Sand averaging an nil Leadmo 5.3 Yards Eer carry Brooks was quietly a half Stepe Hind with 931 Yards and 5.1 Yards a carry. And it was Brooks not Woods who was selected to the pro bowl his second. I love All the attention Ickey s get Ting because it Means i Don t have to worry about dealing with it he said. Like to concentrate on the game at hand. People forget about me. It s great. It always Ickey doing this or Boomer doing that. I Hope the 49ers forget about me,too." the fact that the 5-foot-10, 182-Poundbrooks is being overshadowed is nothing new. At Auburn he had to wait his turn behind Joe Cribbs and William Andrews before finally getting his Chance to in his career with the san Diego chargers he was Caddy to Chuck Mun Cie. After three years marked by flashes of brilliance and inconsistency Brooks let his displeasure Over his limited playing time be known and he asked for a Trade. All i wanted to do was show the peo ple in the nil i could play the game if Given a Chance he said. A proposed Deal with the rams fell through to Brooks great Relief. The rams had a Guy named Dickerson who would overshadow the Sun. Instead he was dealt to the bengals for Veteran run Ning Back Pete Johnson an Exchange Brooks took As another insult. What a joke snorted was on his last legs and i was just getting there would be a few More false Start before Brooks hit his stride. In 1984, his first year with the bengals he was limited to 369 Yards gaining just 3.8 Yards a carry and scoring a Mere two touch Downs. The sentiment in Cincinnati was that a running Back on his last legs was better than one with no legs. I remember very Well As i came of the Field people would yell Why Don t you go Back to san Diego but they did t bother to realize that when you change teams you Don t know the system that Well and you Don t play that Well. I figured once i got a full year under Myfelt they d really Start to appreciate me and that s All it Brooks gained 929 Yards the next year and 1,087 the one after that when he was elected a pro bowl starter. And de spite catching just one pass in his High school career and one pass in his Colleg career when you have Joe Cribbs and William Andrews you Don t pass much he became one of the top pass catching backs in the nil. But he was a one horse show and i took its toll. Hampered by injury he had his most disappointing season last year gaining just 290 Yards. Two years ago i did All the running because we did t have a fullback he said. It was Tough because i had to catch and run. It put a lot of pressure on me.
