Before injuring his ankle by Tom Friend the Washington Post Miami san Francisco s All pro wide receiver Jerry Rice reinsured his right ankle while running a pass pattern during practice monday. The team s Trainer listed him As questionable for sunday s super bowl Xxiii with the Cincinnati Beng als but quarterback Joe Montana disagreed. Hell play believe me Montana said. If he can t walk hell play. I la drag him out the injury came exactly three months after Rice twisted the same ankle in an oct. 16 game against the los Angeles rams in Anaheim. He returned to his old form Only in the most recent playoffs five touchdown receptions in two games. Hampered earlier in the sea son he could be easily jammed at the line by pressing cornerback and the fear now is not so much whether hell play sunday but whether hell play with much aplomb. Trainer Lindsy Mclean said Rice s Basic problem is tendinitis More than anything else and the prescription is rest. The whole team was taking tuesday off and Rice is expected to miss workouts wednesday and thursday. Friday will be an important tune up Day. Rice was out with family members monday night and was not available for comment but the 49ers did t appear to be panicking. It could t have been too bad Montana said be cause i did t see him limping much. I Don t think any thing major happened. He ran a route caught it and continued upfield. Next thing he was walking Rice said last week that the ankle was tender and this was apparently the first sign of tendinitis. It limits his jumping ability which is what normally separates him from the average cornerback. More than anything it s that Quick Jab step that he loses with the injury which is How he also separates himself from bump and run artists. In his place in practice coach Bill Walsh will Start third year player John Taylor a punt returner who has been labelled up and coming by opposing coaches. Mike Wilson will remain a starting split end. We have Good receivers Walsh said but Rice is one of the great players in the game. Of course we could carry on without Walsh meantime made an attempt at describing what a less than 100-percent Rice is like. It the ankle has been haunting the coach said. He went through much of the year with the injury and was playing Well but not As a great player would. He s been Fine until today. He s played extremely Well the last six weeks but before that he was limited a Decoy More than anything if Rice is reduced to just the average receiver More of the Load will land on running Back Roger Craig who has brought his masseuse Jennie Winters and his chiropractor Nick Athens As insurance. Craig paid for their trips although Montana uses Athens services As Well and helped Craig foot the Bill. Ill have treatment probably three Days this week Craig said. Asked if the Rice setback makes him a Little Ner Vous Craig said i m not going to put any extra pres sure on myself worrying about another earlier in the afternoon before practice Rice was walking without a Limp by the hotel Pool As were Craig and other 49ers. Known More for their aesthetics this 49ers group is surprising some people with a newly released rap song entitled we re the 49ers." assisting them was Sheila e., the one time sidekick of Rock n Roll heartthrob Prince. Monday s practice was closed but Walsh said his team s work was Fine although two other 49ers Are injured and did not work out cornerback tory Nixon hamstring and tight end Brent Jones ankle. Nixon is questionable Jones probable. As for the Rice incident Walsh did express one More concern Rice s timing with Montana. In the two playoff victories Over Minnesota and Chicago Rice was charting precise patterns and seemed to gauge Montana s on Field thought process perfectly. Now it s possible that that exquisite timing could be lost with the missed Days of practice and the irritation of favouring his ankle. We d much prefer he d practice and have his time with Joe Montana the coach said. But Walsh kept pointing out his capable backups. Our team has much More skill than our 81 team he said referring to the squad that Defeated Cincinnati for the title seven years ago.
