A Vinci s flapping wings plane proves to be Flop London a Leonardo a Vinci designed a Man propelled flying machine with flapping wings 500 years ago but although it was a work of Genius i would not have flown says James Wink who has built it. The materials of Leonardo s Day were too heavy and even if he had had the ultralight materials of our Day a Man would not have the strength to keep it going by flapping the wings said Wink a 36-year-old professional maker of architectural models. In fact Leonardo soon recognized that gliders had More potential but Wedon t know if he built one. He was Al ways More concerned with ideas than finished projects Wink said. The Model maker was interviewed on monday at London s Hayward gallery where the flying machine with a wingspan of 36 feet was set up for display. It looks like a great Bird with ribbed wings. The Model also has a i resize Model of a Man lying prone his arms out stretched to Flap the wings up and Down using his legs to turn a crankshaft that Cre ates both an upbeat and a downbeat an operating a Windlass to amplify the Power. The machine will be on display in an exhibition called Leonardo a Vinci artist scientist inventor which opens Jan. 26 for three months. Visitors also will be Able to buy a Little folding Model of the flying machine. The 672-Pound Leonardo Wink machine compares with just 72 pounds forthe Man powered Daedalus project which had a 112-foot wingspan. The Daedalus was peddled 74 Miles above a Model of Leonardo a Vinci s proposed flying machine is on display in London. The Aegean sea in april 1988. Wink made his a Vinci Model fro materials available in the 1480s when a Vinci first sketched out his ideas inflight Beechwood Cord brass Iron leather and tallow. He specified Green Beech for the flexible parts of the wings and i used it Wink said. I pieced the elements together from Leon Ardo s drawings which Are in France and Italy and made an intelligent guess about the flying position of the Wink said he also read up on Bird flight and discussed the problems that Leonardo would have encountered with a Man who made a gliding Model of a Pterodactyl a prehistoric Bird. We will never know for sure if Leon Ardo made a Model but he did make a lot of test rigs Wink said. And there is in his notes a remark something like tomorrow i shall make an attempt but we Don t know what he was attempting the Model maker added. Wink said he personally in t inter ested in flight. His Hobby is racing sailing boats which taught him valuable lessons in aerodynamics and the curve of sails cables and rigging. The nearest technology available to Leonardo was shipbuilding and wind Mills which involved massive and movable timbers he said. Wink said Birds have a greater Power to weight ratio than men. Fifty percent of their body weight is in mus cles most of the Muscles being in the wings and they have a different metabolism from Man. We have As much As 20 percent four weight in Muscles but the larger our Muscles become the More inefficient they Are. Leonardo s ideas evolved based on watching Birds in flight an there is a Clear development in his work that moves toward flying machines with out flapping wings Wink said. The Model maker said As he got to know a Vinci better the idea that a Vinci even theorized about the possibility of flight surprised him. His ideas on flight predated the Spanish Armada by 100 years the French revolution by 300 years and 400 years later people were still trying to Fly by jumping off the Eiffel Tower with feathers attached to their arms. There was no precedent for what Leonardo did he said. If you asked me what was the Quality that underlay All his work i can Only say he was All Genius and More. He must have been in touch with some creative source inside himself for which we Haven words Wink said. Habitat can t be expected to pick up the Tab said Patrick keen with a habitat chapter in Chicago. It s painful that we have to take these kinds of actions against families because it s contrary to every thing we stand for in trying to Reform these people keen said. But everyone that claims to need help does t deserve help and people who Are not living up to the very Basic obligation of the minimal amount expected of them Well we had no other several families were threatened with eviction injury 1987 after falling behind in their rent. They said heating and maintenance problems led to huge Utility ills and other founder Millard Fuller and the group s Westside chapter reached an agreement with the families reducing rents from $300 to $264 and promising to Correct the problems. Vivian Abrams said she returned Home earlier this month to find her children huddled outside in the cold and the family s possessions strewn along the curb. When i heard what was happening i rushed Home with my new Boss and we begged and pleaded with or. Keen. My Boss pledged to pay whatever keen wanted and the sheriff said it was up to or. Keen but Patrick keen said no " keen said he was told by habitat officials in Chi Cago to throw the family out. There was an error made in evicting that family Fuller said monday. People Are going to think habitat is a heartless organization that throws mothers and children out in the Street in the dead of Winter. That is not the Case. This is the first time anybody has been Fuller said the group s regional director will be directed to fully investigate just what the situation is in Chicago so we can rectify
