The labor department said its consumer Price Index Rose 0.4 percent last month following a slightly brisker 0.5 percent Advance in june and a modest 0.2percent Rise in May. The july gain was slightly larger than the 0.3 percent expected by most economists and was regarded As a worrisome sign going into August. The aug. 2 iraqi invasion of Kuwait has sent Oil prices spiralling since the government surveyed prices for thursday s report. Even without the Oil Shock inflation for the first seven months of the year was running at a 5.8 percent annual rate compared with 4.6 percent for All of 1989. In july the Cost of shelter shot up 0.9 percent the same As in june. That accounted for half of the Overall increase in prices. Much of that increase was attributed to a 5.1 percent Rise in the Cost of out of town lodging. Food and beverage prices were up 0.4 percent the third consecutive increase but a far smaller one than june s 0.7 percent gain. The Price of fruit and vegetables Rose 1.6 percent reflecting a 32.2 percent jump in the Price of bananas and a 17.1 percent gain in the Cost of lettuce. Pork prices were Down a slight 0.2 percent the first decline since september a period in which they rose19.1 percent. Egg prices dropped 8.2 percent in july. Non alcoholic beverages were up 0.9 percent while fats and Oil Rose 1.1 percent. Transportation c9sts Rose 0.3 percent last month. Gasoline prices which had risen 2.5 percent in june fell 0.3 percent. New car prices reacting to lacklustre sales fell 0.3 per cent the sixth consecutive decline. But used car prices Rose 0.7 percent the largest gain since january 1989. Clothing prices fell 0.2 percent the third consecutive drop. Price increases for some fall and Winter clothing Only partially offset further discounts on Spring and summer clothes. Medical care prices continued a Long string of stubbornly High advances. They Rose 0.9 percent in july and were 9.2 percent higher than a year ago. The Cost of smoking aside from its health effects Rose steeply in july up 2.7 percent after a 2.4 percent jump in june. Tobacco prices were 10.9 percent higher than a year ago. Prices excluding the volatile food and Energy categories Rose a brisk 0.6 percent. Economists often take that measure As a better gauge of underlying inflationary pressures. That so called Core rate has stayed High largely be cause the weakening Economy has t yet pushed unemployment up appreciably. Thus wages and the Cost of services which make up 55 percent of the consumer Index have been rising steadily. The various changes put the Index for All consumer prices at 130.4 in july. However one top cholesterol expert recommended that food companies work to remove them from their products. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats on the other hand were thought to have no effect on cholesterol Levels or even in some cases to lower them. But the new research suggests that hardening these Tats makes them act More like saturated fat and perhaps even worse. The study found that unlike saturated fat trans fatty acids have a double barrelled harmful effect they increase had Choles Terol while lowering Good cholesterol. The research conducted in the Netherlands showed that when people eat food with this kind of fat they increase their bloodstream s Supply of Low density Lipoprotein or ldl., which contrib utes to fatty buildups in the arteries.
