In a writing this letter to address a situation actually one of Many that has pushed me to the Point of leaving the army. After More than six years of service in a variety of different jobs i am now going into the civilian world where i Hope to finally be treated As an adult instead of a child As i am being treated now. Recently there were a number of incidents in my unit involving alcohol. The first was a fight Between two soldiers one of whom was intoxicated and began to make racial slurs at another Soldier. Shortly after that an no in the unit received a dui. The most recent involved a Soldier who was drunk and hit a Wall locker with his fist breaking his hand. These soldiers Are All Over the age of 21 and As such should be held accountable for their own actions and wilting to accept whatever punishment they May receive. Instead the Chain of command has decided to punish the entire unit. As a result of these incidents my commander has ordered everyone in the unit restricted to consuming no More than two alcoholic drinks in a 24-hour period. He has also directed that should anyone violate his policy they will receive disciplinary action under the uniform code of military Justice. I feel that this is not Only unfair but ridiculous As Well. The army is always telling us that we Are the most intelligent most mature army in history. And yet it seems that every time we turn around we Are being restricted in the decisions that we Are allowed to make for ourselves. If i choose to drink alcohol and break the Law then As an adult i should be punished a not my co workers or my Peers. I wish those of you still Here Good Luck and i Hope that some Day the army will treat you All As adults instead of 25-year-old children. A Cary l. Sledge Giessen Germany be Safe responsible having lived overseas in i Barracks i can Tell you of one woman who had at least three abortions within one year and others who thought abortion was an easy solution to an unwanted pregnancy. The solution does no to seem to be an easy one but it makes me sick to my stomach seeing women using abortion As a form of birth control. If you want a Choice choose responsible Safe sex. When rights Are abused there has to come a Point when those rights Are taken away. A Kristen Jackson Gie Belstadt Germany a would you jump too the night before the letter a ugly americans was printed i was in the fest House at our local schist Lenfest listening to a country Western band. A table in front of me was filled with american soldiers. Being loud and Rowdy is Fine under the circumstances but a group of a drugstore cowboys standing on tables throwing coasters Yelling obscenities and harassing the barmaids is not. I do not believe that stories of How americans act on the local Cavern Are Good examples. How americans act around a lot of other americans is not the problem. However at the risk of also being a anti american a 1 will come to his defense on a couple of matters. The soldiers in my example embarrassed me. It was my Pride in my nationality that made me want to apologize to the germans present and let them know that not All americans act that Way. When 1 read a shut the germans do it it strikes me As rather childish. My answer is not too original since most of us heard a similar answer when we used the same excuse As children. However it seems appropriate for adults who cannot come up with a More enlightened response if a German jumped off a building would you jump too pm. Sergeant major was wrong shame on a Man of such a High enlisted rank and position in the Community who publicly goes against part of what America is All about. Forgive the lesson but every american has the constitutional right of self expression. That is to say that americans have the right to share their ideas. They also have the right to pick and choose their own friends decide where to spend their off duty time and determine How to View and judge others in their own minds. As Long As their actions Are within the local Laws they Are within their rights. Unlike some of the people he wrote about the author of the a ugly american letter broke no Law and deserves no punishment. Nor does he deserve such Public degradation from of All people a command sergeant major. A sgt. Michael Newport Oslo Norway Praise for combat medics As a troop commander in the 11th army Cav regt and someone a who was there during the tragic explosion on Blackhorse base in Doha Kuwait i want to take this Opportunity to recognize and thank the combat medics of the regiment. The common image of the troop medic As a Young Soldier who follows the first sergeant around in the Field and dispenses aspirin belies the contributions these heroes make when things Are at their worst. It was the combat medics who evacuated one of my ailing soldiers from a Canvas armoured Mash Hospital located 300 Yards from the exploding ammo Hauler. While fragments the size of desks were falling like rain it was the combat medics who were on the spot to treat shrapnel wounds. Their disregard for personal safety to ensure the safety of others is a great example for All of us a but remember we expect it of them. This alone makes them a special Breed. More than one trooper owes his life or a limb to the services of these Oft Unsung heroes. A capt. John c. Franchek Doha Kuwait letters to the editor Cash Only line needed this is a suggestion to the cafes exchanges Why not make at least one of your checkout lines for Cash Only i know there Are express lines for Cash Only but that a Only Good for up to so Many items. Many times in be been stuck in lines behind Many who were paying for items 6y Check credit card or App. Done to get me wrong. They have every right to pay in whatever Way is convenient to them. But we who would Tike to pay with Cash for our items do so because we done to want to take the extra time to pay with something other than Cash. Without a line for Cash Only though we have to wait for those who done to pay with Cash. In be been to Many exchanges in Germany and have yet to see a Cash Only line with the exception of express lines. A Randy Lasalle Mannheim Germany a doing the right thing i am writing in response to the letters in be read concerning muslims and desert shield storm. I would like to say that i have been a Muslim since birth. I done to claim to be an expert in my religion but i do believe i am doing the right thing by being Here. True muslims Are taught not to fight one another but we Are not taught to surrender to an aggressor whether it be a Muslim or otherwise. Islam is a peaceful religion and just like any other religion we have our Good and bad followers. The muslims in Kuwait were invaded by their Brothers from Iraq. Even though i was not chosen to serve in saudi Arabia i would have been that much More proud to serve my country and my Brothers and Sisters of islam. Now its the kurdish people who Are being robbed of their Freedom and in a Over Here serving proudly. A sgt Tamar f. Pasha operation provide Comfort favors Choice in response to a recent letter a a let a vote on abortion a i want to ask the author How Many unwanted children is he willing to raise love and educate More than 1 million abortions were performed in the United states last year. If those unwanted pregnancies were brought to term How Many is he personally willing to adopt there Are thousands of unwanted children who Are neglected abused and murdered by people who Are incapable or unwilling to care for them. Only those people who Are willing to personally adopt each and every unwanted child have the right to take the option of abortion away from Lomeii. The Best answer is to prevent pregnancies in the first place. Until that happens i stand for Choice. There is no such term As a abortion As he suggests.
