European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 20, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Be our guest warming to the idea of disarming after the cold War Rob Hill guest columnist i recently saw the movie waiting for the Light starring Shirley Maclaine and Teri Garr. It was a Quirky movie about a prank mistaken for a Miracle All set against the backdrop of the cuban missile crisis. That period the Early 1960s, seems like ancient history but it Isnit. I lived through those years although up until i saw this movie Only vague memories of them remained. One scene from the movie in particular triggered those memories and permits me to View current events from a personal perspective. The scene is of school children in their classroom crouching beneath their desks during an air raid practice. The teacher also under a desk is reminding the children to turn their faces away from the window so As not to be blinded by a nuclear Flash. She tells them to cover their ears and open their Mouths. I done to remember it quite that tray. What i remember is first the loud piercing Wail of the air raid Siren. Then the teacher authoritatively commanding us to proceed into the darkened hallway. There we would line up on behind the other get Down on our Knees and fall Forward one Arm under our forehead the other Over the top of our head and covering our ears. We had to stay balled up like Little eggs for what seemed hours and there was always the annoyance of having the kid in front of you a feet hitting you in the head. No matter How Nice or kind our teacher was the rest of the time she became a harsh dictator during these drills. She meant business and would t tolerate anyone not doing precisely what he was told. Sometimes we thought that whatever it was we were hiding from could t be much worse than our teacher. Really what we were hiding from was much worse although i can to Tell you quite what it was. I done to think anyone really can. My teachers probably told us that we were hiding from the soviets who might attack us and god forbid use nuclear weapons. But i think that was a Remote possibility. The threat was never that tangible. Rather we were More afraid of the intangible the unknown. I guess that show nuclear deterrence was and is meant to work. It s to make your enemy think twice about starting anything lest you retaliate with some unspeakable Force. That a Fine i guess on i i \ i s from the cover.4-7 aiming for Europe a olympics. The mind works overtime a How much Force is unspeakable Well we need twice As much. We also need to be prepared in Case we get attacked. Lets prepare for the very worst. Not just one Ivan and his bomb a hundreds of thousands of Ivans with bombs so big and powerful . Come on kids help me build a bomb this is How our parents and our leaders thought at the height of the cold War. I will Tell you for a 7-year-old boy the Impact was this it scared me to death. So i am glad the cold War is Over. In a even More pleased president Bush has called for the reduction and elimination of significant portions of our nuclear Arsenal. It will not Only Foster peace but also peace of mind. My daughter who is almost 4 years old will undoubtedly encounter a great Deal in her life that is frightening. But thank god she Wilt never experience the Bone chilling Wail of an air raid Siren or a teacher suddenly turned tyrant or the madness of a world so paranoid it was willing to destroy itself with the turn of a key and the push of Button.
