Texas rejects easier test standards Austin Texas apr the state school Board on Friday rejected the easier passing standards in new High school graduation tests that it adopted a Day earlier. The lower standards were opposed by gov. Ann Richards and a number of lawmakers business people and educators. The easier standards were supported by Board members who said some schools had prepared students poorly for the test. On thursday state Board of education members voted 8-6 to lower the passing Standard in mathematics from 60 percent to 55 percent for this years seniors. Board members had been told that 8,138 seniors failed the Texas assessment of academic skills test four times meaning they graduate. The lower Standard would have allowed 1,514 More seniors to get their diplomas on time assuming they had completed other graduation requirements. This years seniors Are the first who Are required to pass the test. In previous years a less rigorous test was required. The boards 9-5 vote Friday Means the 8,138 seniors a 4.7 percent of the 174,871 who originally took the exam As juniors a will not graduate on time. Some Board members who stood by the lower Standard suggested political pressure was applied. But the three who changed their votes said they did no to feel pressured to do so. Board member Ray Alexander of Houston who changed his vote said he was moved by thursdays testimony from parents and teachers about students who graduate. But he said he finally decided that lowering the standards might help a few students graduate now but would do serious harm in the Long run
