She suffers from hardening of the arteries and her mind has been affected for a while four of her children including me took care of her on alternating Days. When we could no longer continue we had to put her in a nursing Home. It is heartbreaking to see How this wonderful woman is living. She is restrained in a chair when no one in the family can be with her. The Home supervisor says a sorry we done to have enough staff to have someone with your Mother around the clock she eliminates in her clothing because no one is there to take her to the bathroom. She is left that Way until someone in the family comes to change her. Once another patient deranged poured Orange juice Alt Over her and she was left in that condition until i arrived and cleaned her up. Mother wears dentures. Her Bottom denture has disappeared and no one can find it. Twice she has wandered out of the Home and been found hours later in a Field. This has happened to other residents yet no one has been posted at the door to prevent it from occurring again. The food is terrible but they Tell us it is no one knows whether she eats unless a family member is there to feed her. She is supposed to be bathed daily but we doubt that this is done. We give her a Bath whenever we come to visit and suspect it is All the bathing she gets. Her hair is snarled Ana matted and gets brushed Only when one of us comes to see her. Ann our society honors the dead has humane shelters for animals and funds the arts yet very Little is done for the elderly who made America what it is today. If the Money our government pays out to nursing Homes were Given instead to the families so they could hire some help it would Cost less and the old folks would be Able to live in clean Loving Homes and get the care they deserve. This could also create jobs for caretakers. Wake up America. We Are supposed to be the most advanced nation in the world. All of us will be old one of these Days and we just might end up being treated like my Mother. Her Loving daughter in Tennessee dear daughter for those who Are concerned about relatives in nursing Homes help is available by writing National elder care Institute on elder abuse and state Long term care ombudsman services 2033 k St n.w., suite 304, Washington . 20006. C creator Syndicate Oft Ann Lander sinn s suggestion for tips impolite dear Abby to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary my husband and i revisited the quaint european style inn where we had spent our honeymoon. We had loved the place and found it very much As it was on our honeymoon. But there was one change that we did not care for and we let them know about it when we checked out. In our room we found an envelope with the following message a in the custom of the old world inns a pittance was a voluntary gesture of appreciation for tidy accommodations. Your room has been carefully prepared by Louise and Emma. Thank the following morning after our room had been made up a second envelope was placed beside the first this one was signed by a Louise Emma and Abby we know that tipping is important to those who work in hotels we have always rewarded Good service with a generous tip and we do not need to be reminded to leave a a pittance Quot for the maid. After we returned Home we received a letter from the owners of the inn. It read in part a we recently began leaving tip envelopes for guests who wish to leave gratuities. We Are trying to Cope with the High turnover of maids. After studying the problem we Learned that generally hotels have a higher turnover rate of chambermaid because most people do not want to make a career of housekeeping. Thus far the a tip envelope has been very successful. Our staff is thrilled with the response from our guests and it has been a major morale Booster a we carefully worded our message using the words a voluntary pittance so the guests would know it was not required or demanded. We would appreciate your suggestions on How our message could be better # also will you please review the rules for tipping at a hotel ? an inn grateful guest dear guest the Standard tip for a hotel maid currently is to $2 per night $2 to $3 if two people occupy the room depending on the class of hotel or Motel. If a guest requests extra service towels washcloths soap Etc something extra should be Given for the maid s trouble dear Abby however for the establishment to leave a a a fresh tip envelope in a guest s room every night at a Quot reminder Quot strikes me As coercive regardless of How the message is worded. The High turnover rate of maids is the problem of the innkeeper not the guest. And to impose that upon the guest is not Only bad manners but also a bad business practice. Dear Abby i am sick and tired of people who ask a How much pay for that dress or those shoes a or that purse ? you would be doing me and a lot of other people an enormous favor if you would come up with a Snappy comeback that would put those Nosy people in their place in other words is there an acceptable Way of saying a a it a none of your business Quot had it in Nashville Tenn. Dear had it the Best response to a question that you Don t care to answer is to counter the impertinent question with another question example a Why do Yon want in know Quot a Reader wrote Quot i once had a Nosy person ask me How much Are your car payments i replied Why Are you offering to make the next payment that shut her up in a How to Dew Abby w .
