In the interim Gus has found another woman a Sweet caring nurse named Rita Mary Louise Parker who wants to build a life with him. But aside from having the usual male allergic re actions to commitment Gus also finds his thoughts often wandering to Lee even though such thoughts usually give him a migraine. Meanwhile his buddies Are Badger ing him to come in with them on a Busi Ness Deal to refurbish their beloved local neighbourhood Bowling Alley. But he can t raise his share of the buy in Money unless Lee gets married again and his Alimony payments Stop. So he sets her up with a series of increasingly bizarre men. His task is made All the harder by the fact that she s having a sem serious fling with her married College professor Tom William Hurt. And All the while everyone except Gus and Lee can see that they still have a thing for each other. Not the least of this film s Madden ing quirks is the Way various plot elements Are left dangling in the Breeze. Especially where Tom is concerned. As an actor Hurt is clearly in a different league than his co stars yet writers Amy Schor and Vicki Polon give his character the Shab Biest treatment of anyone in the cast. When Lee and Tom Are first seen to Gether it s not at All obvious that he is her College professor. Then he pops up in one scene with a pre school toddler in Tow but it s not made Clear whether he s a single Parent or married. Just about the time it is revealed that Tom is in fact hitched he inexplicably Dis appears from the movie so  can suddenly become deeply involved with yet another Guy Dominic Vincent d Onofrios Sweet shy pharmacist. That tone of unfocused haphazard Ness suffuses the film. The actors do what they can with the material especially Sciorra who has quietly built a solid career in relatively minor films. Parker who was Good in grand can Yon and great in Fried Green Toma toes also deserves better. Dillon on the other hand can be hard to take. He s a decent enough actor but his performances Are limited by his dem and dose new York Persona. Director Anthony Minghella has an understandably hard time propelling the meandering script to a conclusion so the film feels much longer than it really is. The generic lonely hearts Story about people looking for love in All the wrong places has been told much better in any number of other films. Or. Wonderful adds nothing new to the genre.
