Wright during the holidays its important to reflect on the contributions to peace and Freedom the 86th Wing has made during the past year. The tradition of americans helping others has been manifested during the past year through the individual efforts and team work of the 86th Wing out of Ramstein a Germany. During the past year the outstanding professionals of both 86th Wing civil engineers and medical group Haye supported Hospital operations in Zagreb Croatia As part of operation provide Promise. In 1993,86th civil engineers have provided continuous try support to . Operations in Zagreb. The 86th civil engineers Are supporting a tent City and Hospital that a caves both . Military forces and civilian victims of the fighting in Bosnia and Herzegovina the 86th medical group personnel Are also deployed to Zagreb providing Field medical care in very demanding conditions. Two months ago i had the Opportunity to accompany a group of bosnian civilians on an aeromedical evacuation flight to the United states. The flight was supported by members of the 86th Wing flight nurses and medical technicians Wing members had also helped evacuate the civilians from Sarajevo the final destination for the group was a Hospital in Minnesota where some could receive treatment for amputation associated complications. Ultimately Many would receive artificial limbs. A 5-year-od girl on the flight was the victim of artillery shelling in Sarajevo and her left leg had been amputated a few months prior to her evacuation. During the entire flight to Andrews fab my this Young lady never stopped smiling. Everyone on the flight who met her was inspired to meet such a Brave thankful Little girl. Certainly the members of the 86th Wing on the flight were thankful to have been Able to help. In 1993,86th Wing f-16s have flown thousands of aimed missions Over Northern Iraq and the former Yugoslavia As part of operations provide Comfort and provide Promise. One of the less publicized results of this Effort is that kurdish families in Iraq have been Able to peacefully re establish their lives. With Only a few cinder blocks some donated sheep and goats and the Protection of Airpower they Are rebuilding villages that had been totally destroyed by the iraqi military. Similar positive effects of Airpower Over Bosnia and Herzegovina were Best described to me by an Abc news reporter. She noted that while she was in Sarajevo an intense artillery shelling of cration by various forces around the City immediately stopped when Low Altitude Jet noise 86th Wing f-16s supported by 86th Wing air controllers became very apparent Over Sarajevo. Moreover no Belliger ent fixed Wing fighter aircraft which would add significantly to the carnage in the former Yugoslavia have been employed by hostile forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
